@Suga,
Workgroup allows the computers to see each other, helps network sharing and RDP. Domain gives more control on user access.

Here is the scenario. You have Machine A (MAC-A) with user-a1, user-a2 and Machine B (MAC-B) with user-b1, user-b2. You login to these machines with local accounts.

Now, turn on Remote Access on MAC-A, and
1) if you allow all authorized users, then you can RDP from MAC-B and login with user-a1 or user-a2

or

2) if you allow user-a1 for remote access, then you can RDP from MAC-B and login as user-a1 only.

It does not matter, what you login to MAC-B (host machine) as.

Make sure you have the RDP service turned on and provide the authenticated users (local users).

I think this is where I might have messed up. Authenticates users list add cheyyaledu anukunta.

So do I need to add the users list one by one on ALL of the computers/laptops in same workgroup and any other shortcut?

did setup a domain.

Thanks for the information.

What is the difference between setting up a domain vs a simple workgroup. What advantages do we get when using a domain?

Also for RDP, does destination machine has to be up and active or can he wake it up from sleep/hibernate mode?

Evaro chepparu if all of these machines are set to one domain server then only it is possible ani. No idea if that is true

NOT true.

I had Windows Server 2003 based home server until last year. It is just a machine on home network. I made sure all my home machines including macs have same "WORKGROUP". You can name the workgroup anything you want. I could do network sharing the folder and RDP across the machines. Make sure you have the RDP service turned on and provide the authenticated users (local users).

This year, I upgraded the server to Windows Server 2012 OS and did setup a domain. Couple of my machines are included in the domain, so I have to login as domain user to the computer. Rest of the machines are not part of the domain, that means I use local account to login. I still am able to network share and RDP across the machine. The domain does not come into picture.

Thank You bhayya.

Let me ask it here if anyone is interested they may benefit out of it.

I've ZERO knowledge on networking. This request may be dumb.. feel free to correct me.

I want to setup a server environment with domain server and hook up all the laptops authenticate through that. One reason is to map each other harddrives on these machines and be accessible from other machines and also RDP to any of the machines.

Currently Win 7/Win 8 unnayi anni.. I have to explicitly share a folder to view the content. But if I want to connect to other machines when I RDP it fails. Evaro chepparu if all of these machines are set to one domain server then only it is possible ani. No idea if that is true and if so, what is required ani.

Question ardham avvakapothe thittakandi.

Consumer grade routers don't show these stats. If you install custom firmware like Tomato, DD-WRT, they can show the network load stats.
