Yeah, i used to. Cutting costs is fine, as long as you reinvest it in inorganic stuff. It can't be a easy road to revival. However if that is the stated strategy that you will just milk what you have, then there is nothing wrong in that. Except that there was a gap between strategy communication and employee expectations. You can't say in front of the street that you are going to invest for growth blah blah blah while at the same time stop investing in R&D, M&A, etc. Yes - in fact MM has no credit for the Microsoft search deal or even Alibaba. But even on the Microsoft search deal, it is a fairly complex deal to work out and it would have been a far better option to just sell the damn thing rather than do this tortous integration with MSFT. Furthermore, whatever product changes have happened after MM have been disasters like the new front page and the new Yahoo mail which is downright terrible. Without giving too many details, here is my take on Carol and aftermath: 1) Search deal with Microsoft is very good for Yahoo. Yahoo gets almost half of its revenue from search. With deal, their Search costs almost became zero and they still get to keep 80% of revenue. In the last 2 years, Yahoo's search revenues have gone significantly. What baffles me is people credit Marissa with it when they are practically out of search business and Carol was the one who signed the deal. 2) Their another big chunk of revenue comes from Display advertising business which is in a decline. Interim CEO Levinsohn tried to do a similar deal with Microsoft for display just before Marissa came in. 3) Most of Yahoo's current valuation comes from Alibaba. Alibaba's CEO is a fraudster, he tried to sell a big part of Alibaba to his personal company almost for free  If this sounds familiar it is similar to what Ramalinga Raju tried to do with Mytas and Satyam. Carol handled that very well. 4) Marissa enters and scuttled Display deal. Starts investing like a kid in a candy store. She even tried to halt Microsoft search deal in Taiwan saying that Microsoft will be getting a new CEO. Courts ninna dobbeyamannayi. Regarding your comment on Carol aggresively cutting costs...I like the move. Employees obviously hated her because of this but I don't see much of a tech product future for Yahoo. Y! got a big pile of money last year, most of that went into buybacks and these random acquisitions. In fact Y! is only an investment company right now and not an internet company. They have another 24% stake in Alibaba. But there is a tax issue in that as the funds can't be repatriated back to US without paying US tax, so that stake is worth only around 16% effectively in cash terms. | ||

Yahoo as a company has not seen much growth since Marissa came on board, either on revenues or profits, but the stock has seen a 100% jump. This is solely on the back of the proposed Alibaba IPO. I don't agree with Saarang that Carol was better than MM. Carol was sad on her product knowledge, she would have been a good COO but that's it. Both are equally bad, one does not know technology and put Y! on standstill for 3 years going aggressive on cost cutting and cutting down on M&A, the other is technically fine but has no experience in running big companies. Some of the folks she got from Google are running disasters. She did one good thing which is raise the profile of Y! a bit and create a lot of buzz around her slew of acquisitions, many of which are quite tiny. But she is totally clueless on running the company. Too much control in the US right now, lack of focus on markets outside the US which is funny considering that almost the entire market cap of Y! now is actually coming from its Asian holdings in Yahoo Japan and Alibaba. If i were given a billion dollars, i may not buy Tumblr but some great companies in Emerging countries. | ||

Definetely not everyone. In fact, most of the press is giving her a positive coverage even when she had zero acheivements. I am not saying this because she is a female. Infact, I liked Carol Bartz better than the current one. Here is my brief reasoning (Detailed gaa essay raase opika ledhu): She had no experience in managing a big business. I don't think Yahoo can every compete with the tech gaints or the smaller nimble companies.
