Pplsuck:not sure where u got this from..........
I gave the link to the site in th epost - it is the complete translation of Mahabharata by Kisari Mohan Ganguli. The same site has the complete text in sanskrit as well with some crossreferencing ability - I did not look for the relevant sanskrit verse - but if interested you can look thru and validate if the translation is accurate.. http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/maha/index.htm The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Anand_n:My appetite hath not been appeased. Thou art my older sister, O let me have thy sanction. This foremost one of the Bharata princes had approached me, desiring to have intercourse. His appetite unsatiated, shall I not follow him in the region of Yama to gratify him?
not sure where u got this from..........still it is very ambiguous as to what they think is the thing they want to do.....it seems more like fulfilling the last wish of their husband......... every single act/ritual in Hinduism is described in such verbiage..........in such detail that almost nothing will be left to imagination............not sure whether accepting the ambiguous words of Kunti (interpreted in English by someone) is a great idea......and using it as a proof for such ritual seems farfetched to me..... and looking at the facts, none of the other women did it......except in this special instance....... social need in the recent millennium makes sense to me and my logical mind.....spiritual prescription makes more sense to you......anyways, to each their own....... |

Pplsuck:may be one of us will get our understanding right.......
Okay here you go - interpret it as you will - there is a clear thought process that Sahagamanam is the path of punya I never said it was mandatory - I said the belief that is was noble came fromt he scriptures "Kunti then said, 'I am the older of his wedded wives; the chief religious merit must be mine. Therefore, O Madri, prevent me not from achieving that which must be achieved. I must follow our lord to the region of the p. 263 dead. Rise up, O Madri, and yield me his body. Rear thou these children.' Madri replied, saying, 'I do clasp our lord yet, and have not allowed him to depart; therefore, I shall follow him. My appetite hath not been appeased. Thou art my older sister, O let me have thy sanction. This foremost one of the Bharata princes had approached me, desiring to have intercourse. His appetite unsatiated, shall I not follow him in the region of Yama to gratify him? O revered one, if I survive thee, it is certain I shall not be able to rear thy children as if they were mine. Will not sin touch me on that account? But, thou, O Kunti, shall be able to bring my sons up as if they were thine. The king, in seeking me wishfully, hath gone to the region of spirits; therefore, my body should be burnt with his. O revered sister, withhold not thy sanction to this which is agreeable to me. Thou wilt certainly bring up the children carefully. That indeed, would be very agreeable to me. I have no other direction to give!' "Vaisampayana continued, 'Having said this, the daughter of the king of Madras, the wedded wife of Pandu, ascended the funeral pyre of her lord, that bull among men.'" http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01126.htm If you have any other translations that contradict this - do share The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Anand_n:not an individual decision
not sure how many other cases were there.......there is amba, ambika, ambalika, sathyavathi and so many others in the same boat......... seems like individual belief than some prescription by someone else.....
Anand_n:no point us arguing about it
may be one of us will get our understanding right....... I am thinking it is not prescribed by religion nor is it practiced widely......it was a social need in the recent millennium and still not sure if it was that widely practiced.......... widows were always there even in those times of practice.......and movies like "Water" are made and appreciated too......... I think the wrong dots are being connected...... |

Pplsuck:what has the practice gotta do with the epics?...........what am I missing here?
The belief that it was a noble act that redeemed the soul of the woman .. Kunti and Madri argue about who is going to perform it..Kunti claims its her right as she is the first wife - Madri claims its her right cos Pandu sought her in his last moments and then goes to imploring Kunti as she would be a better mother - right , not an individual decision Anyways , no point us arguing about it The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Anand_n:Satisahagamanam - as a practise
AFAIK, it was hardly one incident that was explained in any of the epics.......and it was individual decisions at that time......... it became a practice as self defense in the last 1200-1300 years........as a means to escape the brutal looters and rapists.......... both of them can be explained as it is..........a practise to escape the inhumans that invaded India.....may be after British came it dint seem to be relevant...and got established as a practice by that time......... what has the practice gotta do with the epics?...........what am I missing here? |

Isn't this sanitising too ? The bigger question in Bunty's mind is how to explain Satisahagamanam - as a practise - not as an individual case.. Though I agree on one part unnadi cheppatam better - it is better for them to find out from us than outside Ofcourse it needs to be age appropriate Ninna ma vadu naku oka jhalak ichadu -after we discussed this and I talked about how it was abolished later he asked - did the british put a stop to it ? And he is not even educated in India on so called JNU textbooks It led to a discussion on Ram Mohan Roy and his quest to separate superstition for the spiritual part of hinduism - this is why I enjoy watching MB with him The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Chala cinematic liberties teesukuntunnaru..if your kid is young and it does not matter then ok - but I am having to correct the story to my son as we watch So watch out and read up if you are particular Yesterday's episode was so far removed from the translation I read The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |
