Filmbuff:I don't know how true this is, but one thing i can't fathom is why we are never taught in school that the Qutub Minar was built on a Hindu structure...
I don't remember whether I studied on school or learnt on my visits to QM but have known for a long time that it was built after destruction of hindu/jain temples... Did the whole structure preexist - not sure about that theory .. But that should be easy to establish by dating the material at the top ...that would be conclusive evidence. About the motifs -and writing - maybe they just reused stones from the temple ruins - and the shilpis were most likely all local indians/hindus - so its would not be surprising that they fell back to their traditional designs while building a new structure - just as it is plausible that the arabic inscriptions were overlaid on the brahmi inscriptions Inta science vachaka they should just publish dating evidence and put the debate to rest The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

Filmbuff:some even argue that even the Qutub Minar was a Hindu structure and was just renamed by the early Muslim invaders..

I visited Qutub Minar last week and was surprised to find that the ruins around were actually a Hindu temple/ structure. There are typical Hindu temple carvings all around..even the Iron Pillar is a Gupta dynasty structure with Brahmi script..i did some net search later and found some interesting articles, some even argue that even the Qutub Minar was a Hindu structure and was just renamed by the early Muslim invaders.. http://www.hindunet.org/hindu_history/modern/kutub_oak.html I don't know how true this is, but one thing i can't fathom is why we are never taught in school that the Qutub Minar was built on a Hindu structure... |
