Congress chief directs Digvijay to speed up Telangana note by October first week METRONEWS/NEW DELHI : The Congress high command on Wednesday decided to expedite the process for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to carve out separate Telangana state, notwithstanding the resignation threats from the Seemandhra Congress MPs and union ministers. Taking serious note of the defiant attitude of the party leaders from Seemandhra region, including Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in opposing the Congress Working Committee resolution on Telangana, Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had summoned AICC in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh to her residence and discussed the strategy to be adopted on the Telangana issue. Sources said Sonia expressed unhappiness over the inordinate delay in finalizing the cabinet note on Telangana and the submission of the Antony Committee report. Digvijay reportedly told her that the delay was due to the ill-health of the Defence Minister and that it would be readied at the earliest. According to sources, Sonia directed that the Cabinet note on Telangana get ready in the first week of October, so that further steps be taken without wastage of much time. The Centre would constitute a Group of Ministers in the second week of October to look into the issues arising out of the division of the state. Sonia is understood to have suggested that the draft Bill on Telangana should be ready by the time winter session of Parliament commences in November. Digvijay told media later that the cabinet note on Telangana was now being prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs. “Once it gets the political clearance, it would be placed before the Union Cabinet and sent to the state legislative assembly for ratification,” he said, without saying when the process would be completed. Meanwhile, Union Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily told media in Bangalore that the Antony Committee, in which he is also a member, had almost finalized its report and it would be submitted to Sonia Gandhi very soon. Congress president directs Digvijay Singh speed up Telangana note by October first week Sources said Sonia had directed Digvijay to call the Chief Minister and PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana for one last time in the last week of September and tell them to take steps to end the agitation in the Seemandhra region, lest they should be prepared to face the consequences. “If they fail to bring the situation under control, the high command is contemplating on removing the Chief Minister and impose President’s Rule in the state, while dividing the PCC into two different units – one for Telangana and another for Seemandhra,” sources said. That Sonia had taken serious note of the Chief Minister’s defiance was evident from the strong remarks made by Digvijay while speaking to media after his meeting with Sonia. “The Chief Minister should not forget that he represented the people of the entire State and not just that of Seemandhra region. He has to take care of all the regions. His style of functioning will damage not only the party, but also the Seemandhra people,” he said. Indicating that Sonia was not willing to go back on the CWC resolution, Digvijay appealed to the Congress MPs from the Seemandhra region not to take any hasty decision in the matter as the high command was genuinely working towards protecting the interests of the people of all the regions. “While the Telangana formation is non-negotiable, the high command is willing to discuss any issue raised Seemandhra MPs following the state bifurcation,” he said. The high command also viewed the ongoing agitation in Seemandhra region rather seriously. “While private buses, schools and hospitals are functioning normally, why should only government services should be affected due to strike causing untold miseries to the people?” Digvijay questioned. Making a fervent appeal to the APNGOs to call of their two- month old strike to avoid further inconvenience to the people, he assured that all problems arising out of division of the state would definitely be considered.
