By calling the campaign to create Telangana state "a chauvinistic movement," Sadanand Dhume grievously mischaracterizes one of the greatest people's movements of modern times—a movement that has involved nearly 35 million people participating in hundreds of thousands of peaceful agitations, rallies and protests ("Hyderabad Blues," op-ed, Aug. 6)

The Telangana movement is a grassroots, democratic movement that has touched almost every villager and urban dweller living in this region. In it walks farmers, lawyers, bankers, miners, doctors, laborers, engineers, teachers, academics, students and businessmen, hand in hand. It has brought together leaders from all political parties. No other movement in India since the Indian independence movement has been so pervasive and inclusive. The movement has endured great pains—nearly a thousand young people committed suicide for the cause—but has not harmed anyone in reprisal.

India should celebrate such democratic mass movements. The Telangana movement has created hundreds of books, thousands of songs, movies and plays. It is fight of the common man, of the lowest denominator, the worker, the peasant and the poor.

While the U.S. has 50 states for 320 million people, India has 28 states for a population of 1.2 billion. Sandand Dhume calls demands for new states "parochial passions" and prescribes that minority regions seeking statehood should "enjoy the broad consent of the entire state in question." In fact the Constitution of India makes it a democratic right of Indians to seek statehood to escape the tyranny of majority.

Without knowing what the Telangana movement is all about, any lazy writer can read biased Indian media and conclude that the Telangana movement is led by a chauvinist "rabble-rouser" and represents the "closing of Telugu mind."

A diligent reporter would conduct his research and realize that this is a movement led by people who are trying to fulfill a democratic aspiration that is nearly 60 years old—and furthermore that this movement has led to a revival of Telangana culture, which had been deliberately suppressed by the majority.

Today the Wall Street Journal, with its lazy research, careless characterization and prejudiced reporting, has stooped low in its journalism credentials.
