Telangana issue: Telugu people observe hunger strike in Chennai Saradha Mohan Kumar, TNN Aug 7, 2013, 10.50PM IST CHENNAI: More than 100 Telugu people went on a hunger strike at Mylapore on Wednesday, protesting against the formation of Telangana. The strike was organized by the members of about 30 Telugu associations, including Andhra Social and Cultural Association, at the AmarjeeviPottiSreeramulu Memorial Building from 9am to 5.30pm. "We've been holding meetings and agitations in this building to show our disagreement on the separation of Andhra Pradesh. If one state is divided, then every part of the country will ask for separate entities," said Ramakrishna Tangutury, state secretary of the Andhra Pradesh chamber of commerce. He said that the associations were trying to seek permission to carry out an agitation in the streets. "We may hold a strike in two or three days. We would like NRIs, as well as Telugu people in other states to join the cause. More than 400 people visited us in today's hunger strike," said Tangutury. Narasa Reddy, former president of Andhra Club, ended the strike by distributing lemon juice to the agitators. Artistes, including singer SP Vasantha, participated in the agitation and sang patriotic songs. |
