While the Congress camp is in complete confusion following difference of opinion between ministers and legislators on quitting of their posts, TDP leaders are unable to defend party president N ChandrababuNaidu’s decision to accept division of the state. As a result, YSRCP has once again grabbed its pole position in Seemandhra despite some reverses in the recent panchayat polls. In fact, YSRCP scored brownie points when its MLAs quit the State Assembly before the CWC took the final call. While both Congress and TDP are seen as villains behind the bifurcation, YSRCP stood firm by emerging as lone party that talked about the rights of the Seemandhra. Though the Congress and the TDP leaders too began quitting their posts, the delay had done irreparable damage to their image. Political pundits noted that TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu’s hurried reaction with demand to grant Rs 4 lakh crore for developing new capital had damaged the party’s fortunes that looked brightened after good results in the recent panchayat elections. In fact, the general perception of commoners in Seemandhra is that the situation in the state would not have gone this far had YSR been alive. Sensing trouble, both Congress and TDP are trying to put the entire blame on YSR for the present crisis by citing 1999 resolution of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). “It is not correct to put the entire blame on Congress as all parties except MIM and CPI (M) have agreed for bifurcation. In fact, the late YSR had stated on the floor of Assembly that they have no objection to bifurcation if certain doubts of the people from other region over water allocations are cleared in a proper way,” was how APCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana had tried to fix YSRCP. AICC state affairs incharge Digvijay Singh too referred to YSR’s resolution to Sonia Gandhi in 1999 and subsequent refusal by the then home minister LK Advani to carve out Telangana state. Digvijay tried to hit two birds (YSRCP and BJP) with one shot by blaming both in his first briefing after the CWC decision. Taking a cue from the Congress brass, TDP leadership in Seemandhra too has begun to push the blame on YSR for the division of state. But commoners were not ready to buy the argument. “Even an illiterate in the region tells you that KCR would not have resorted to fast unto death in 2009 had YSR been at helm of affairs,” observed economics professor LSN Prasad of Guntur. Commoners in Seemandhra believe that it was YSR’s courageous attempt in 2009 elections that diminished the TRS strength even in Telangana. “Corruption charges apart, the death of YSR has certainly crippled the state. We have failed to take lead even in the political vacuum due to political blunders committed by our boss,” commented a TDP MLC who does not wish to be named. | ||
