T-dialect will pose an 'official' challenge
TNN | Aug 3, 2013, 01.37 AM IST

HYDERABAD: A new Telangana state will have to deal with the question of choosing the dialect for official purposes. Though the language of the new state will be Telugu, zeroing in on the official dialect is not likely to be an easy task what with all the 10 districts of Telangana speaking in different variations of the language, sometimes, showing drastic differences within a district itself.

Given that 'Telangana Telugu' spoken widely in the region, cannot be used for official paperwork, the question is how will the new state deal with the tricky issue of dialect?

MLC K Nageshwar said that the dialect used in the region cannot possibly become official. "A dialect cannot be used for written purposes. It is only used in common parlance for communication," he said. Nageshwar, however, points out that even in the official communication used by the government today is not widely used by the general public. "It cannot be described as something commonly spoken in the state. Official language is a language in itself," he added.

However, with the formation of the new state, Nageshwar said while the same language of the day should be allowed to continue, there should be scope for adopting words which are commonly used in the Telangana region.

Writer, lyricist, author and Jnanpith award winner Dr C Narayana Reddy, however, said the spoken language in Telangana should necessarily become the official language. "If the standard expression 'Chesadu' ('he did it'), it should now be 'Chesindu', just the way it is generally spoken in Telangana. Likewise 'Vahcchadu' (He has come) will have to give way to 'Ochchindu'," he said.

While Dr C Narayana Reddy, a former chairman of the Official Language Commission is firm on adopting the Telangana dialect, some said it is not feasible. "You cannot wish away a language. We should also not consciously suppress a language that has been in vogue only because we now have the liberty to choose our type of language. The language that has got to become acceptable over a period of time and will have to continue to be used," said balladeer Gadar.

Gadar pointed out that though dialects are spoken differently, when it comes to written communication, a standard is adopted. "The word that is printed is important and has sanctity. We cannot afford to be too sentimental about the language we speak, to introduce it in the written form. That would be being too rigid and adopting an unscientific approach. We have to understand communication in the context of globalisation," Gadar added.

Telugu university vice-chancellor Elluri Siva Reddy said it would be inevitable for official Telugu that will be adopted by a new Telangana state to be influenced by the spoken language, to some extent. "It is possible that there will be a change in verb forms," he said. However, the uniformity that exists in the language that is used now will have to necessarily continue with some generally acceptable changes, he added.
