After Telangana no new state should be created: Trinamool Terming the creation of Telangana as an âelection gimmickâ, Trinamool Congress on Saturday sought a categorical assurance from the government that no new state will be created further. âWe have pointed out to the Speaker that creating Telangana just before the polls is an election gimmick and it is creating trouble in the entire country,â TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee told reporters here after the all-party meeting convened by Speaker Meira Kumar. He said, âUnless the Home Minister comes out with a statement that no other state will be created (in future), agitations wonât stop. In Assam, agitation has already started. Yesterday few government accommodations were burnt by some agitators. This issue has to be resolved first.â After the Centre announced its decision to form Telangana, the Gorkhaland issue has come back to the centre-stage in West Bengal, threatening to assume an alarming situation. âSome are talking about the formation of Gorkhaland and we are not going to allow that,â Mr Banerjee said. |

Telangana fallout invites trouble for Tripura The ongoing turmoil over demand for separate states in Assam has threatened transportation of essential commodities and petroleum products to neighbouring Tripura. Meanwhile a hardliner indigenous party has given a call for agitation to press demand for a state for Tripuraâs 33 percent tribal population. Current agitation by tribes in Assam especially in Bodoland and Karbi Anglong areas has already hit railways and roadways attributed as lifelines for moving commodities to landlocked state. âTripura would suffer if the current tension continues in Assamâ, transport minister Manik Dey told The Hindu on Saturday. He lashed out at the central government for restive situations in different parts of the country in the wake of decision to create separate Telangana state. Minister said, âit is Congress that is responsible for this (tension) and they should solve thisâ. Mr. Manik Dey described the situation alarming in places like Kokrajhar in Bodoland and warned that all seven states in the region would be affected. Meanwhile ruling CPI(M) has strongly opposed demand for a separate tribal state in Tripura. âThis is a dangerous and divisive demand, and needs to be vehemently condemnedâ, partyâs state secretary Bijan Dhar sharply reacted over the demand voiced by the Indigenous Peoplesâ Front of Tripura (IPFT). IPFT has announced decision to hold a rally in Agartala on August 23 on the issue of separate tribal state. The party would submit a memorandum to the Governor addressed to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. âWe want a separate state with areas under the tribal autonomous district council. This is a justified demand to protect our identity, culture and customsâ, IPFT president Narendra Chandra Debbarma told newsmen. Tripura tribal autonomous district council was established by the sixth schedule of the constitution in 1982 and the council has jurisdiction on three fourth of stateâs total geographical area. âWe appeal people to reject this troublesome and destructive demand of IPFT. It is trying to confuse people from tribal communityâ, CPI (M) leader Bijan Dhar added. Main opposition Congress and its tribal ally Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) have not yet reacted over IPFT move. |
