Treatment status as on 7th June 2011: First cycle of chemotherapy is done. Cost incurred Rs 1.30 Lakh (which includes Rs. 39 K for implanting a device to chest vein for injecting chemo drugs). Currently he is getting treated for side effects that includes lung infection, fever, low WBC count, low platelets count. Cost incurred so far in treating the side effects + first chemo is around Rs. 3.1 Lakh. Poonacha will be administered for 5 more cycles of this chemotherapy. This figure might change based on the bone marrow tests after each chemotherapy. He needs to undergo total of 6 cycles of chemo and based on each chemo result there could be ICU admission and other treatment. | ||

Cost of treatment: The approximate cost of treatment in case we have a HLA-matched relative is 25 to 30 lakhs. The approximate cost of treatment in case of HLA-matched unrelated donor is around 45 lakhs. Luckily Poonacha found HLA-matched relative in his sister. That was his first relief in this painful journey. Doctor�s have estimated the Stem cell transplant procedure along with strong dose of Chemo�s which is required before starting Stem cell transplant procedure to cost around 25 to30 lakhs. How is the current funding happening? 1. Poonacha has a medical insurance of 5 Lakhs. The insurer has agreed to extend the insurance amount to 7+1 lakhs from 5 lakhs. 2. About Poonacha: Poonacha is an IT employee working in Bangalore. He is in his early years of his professional career. His father is working in Government organization as a driver. Mother is house wife. What happened: Poonacha was diagnosed positive for Blood cancer (acute leukemia) on 9/16/2009. He underwent treatment from Bangalore Institute of Oncology by Dr. Shekhar Patil. He went on loss of pay for a period of 12 months. He was compelled to work to meet his medical expenses and he joined back in the month of Oct 2010. He never compromised on his work and he is highly respected by his team mates for his quality and timely deliverables. He has always been a outstanding performer in the team. Rcently (February-April, 2011), he developed more complications in his health. Blood test done( on 30th April), revealed some abnormal Cells (Blasts) in the report. When consulted, the Doctor asked him to get a Bone Marrow Aspiration done to get the clear picture about the new developments. Bone Marrow test results revealed re-lapse (Cancer cells have started to re-occur). Blast cells which were around 1% during December 2010, suddenly showed up 60% on 2nd May,2011. What next? What is the treatment? Repeat chemotherapy afresh, redo all the treatment again. Does this help? Does this guarantee non-relapse? Doctors said ïÿýNoïÿý. It cannot be guaranteed in case of adults. But can be guaranteed in case of kids. So what next. One last option is ïÿýAllogeneic stem cell transplantationïÿý. He has been referred for Allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation is a procedure in which a person receives blood-forming stem cells (cells from which all blood cells develop) from a genetically similar, but not identical, donor. This is often a sister or brother, but could be an unrelated donor. An allogeneic stem cell transplant replaces a patientïÿýs stem cells with a matching donorïÿýs healthy stem cells to suppress the disease and restore the patientïÿýs immune system. Finding a matching donor is key to a successful allogeneic stem cell transplant. Donors may include: ïÿý HLA-matched relative (most often a sibling) ïÿý HLA-matched unrelated donor ïÿý HLA miss-matched family member ïÿý Unrelated umbilical cord blood In preparation for the transplant procedure, doctors usually administer high-dose chemotherapy, or a combination of high-dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy, to destroy the remaining cancer cells. The transplant is done after the intensive treatment is complete. The donated cells are infused into the patientïÿýs bloodstream, similar to a blood transfusion. After entering the bloodstream, the cells travel to the bone marrow, where they develop into mature red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets (a process called engraftment). There are very few (10-11) hospitals in India which carry this transplantation. In South India, CMC, Vellore, Manipal Bangalore and Narayana Hrudayalaya Tissue Bank and Stem Cell Research Center, Bangalore. Now Poonacha is counseling with Dr Ashish Dishit (Consultant Clinical Haemtology, Manipal Hospital) for Allogeneic stem cell transplantation. |
