From the word go, the movie tests your patience. The much talked about jump off the hill - three cheers to the actors who did it - is over in the first minute of the movie and is symbolic of the journey the viewer is about to embark on - Start on a high and nosedive - never to rise again!

They shout their lungs out every time they need to speak something and for some reason are so animated that you feel Sunny Deol's performance in Gadar is an epic example of subtlety in the school of acting.

There are movies that leave you awestruck. You are amazed. You are dazed. You are excited about the way the movie unfolds in front of your eyes and you are completely content when you walk through that cramped exit route at the end of the three hour exhilarating experience.

There are, however, movies that make you dash through the same exit route with a speed comparable to the escape velocity of the planet because your three hour experience, instead of being exhilarating, turns out to be an ordeal that you wouldn't want your sworn enemy to go through.

Every year, you see a handful of movies that come with a pre-release expectation so high that it would give the Petronas towers an inferiority complex. Such movies often end up as damp squibs with exceptions so few that they are practically negligible.

And then we have movies that we don't know about till they hit the silver screen and they become big hits because, let us face it, the audience have zero expectations from these movies and go through the experience described quite eloquently (I hope) in the first paragraph of this article even if the movie has only the slightest hint of positive energy.

Raavan, unfortunately, is a damp squib.

From the word go, the movie tests your patience. The much talked about jump off the hill - three cheers to the actors who did it - is over in the first minute of the movie and is symbolic of the journey the viewer is about to embark on - Start on a high and nosedive - never to rise again!

I thought I would never live to write a sentence like this - The worst performance of the movie is produced by the leading man himself - Junior Bacchan. He is ultra-loud, an epitome of one dimensional acting and is so annoying that after the fifteenth minute, you are just praying that the mad dash explained in the second paragraph starts soon.

Nothing ever happens in the movie. There is water - so much that it gives you a phobia - and then there is some more water. The actors are sometimes seen on the edge of the water and sometimes in the middle of it. They shout their lungs out every time they need to speak something and for some reason are so animated that you feel Sunny Deol's performance in Gadar is an epic example of subtlety in the school of acting.

The second half is marginally, I repeat - only marginally, better because the story had to be wrapped up eventually. However, the movie is probably the slowest you have seen in this genre and the sad part is - it doesn't even grow on you.

Parallels to Ramayana are evident but there are a couple of places where there is a marked and serious departure from the age old classic and at the end you are a little confused as to who is who but then you don't care as the free open world outside the movie hall is so inviting...

The dialogues make you cringe, the complete absence of the various shades of grey make you wonder and the proverbial twist in the tale at the end is something most five year olds can guess. Spoiler alert here, the conversation in the train in the climax is as artificial and unbelievable as possible and I wonder why the leading lady even took it seriously.

Subtlety and underplay - normally regular attributes of a Mani Ratnam movie - are conspicuously absent in this agonizing drama. The songs come as showstoppers and the climax is a bigger disappointment than you can imagine.

Finally, the CGI work in the movie make you feel Magadheera is Avatar 3D.

My verdict: You are anyway going to watch it. So it doesn't matter.
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.
