Ramachandran's lectures are always make compelling viewing :-) Reiteration of some of the ideas Hofstadter explores in GEB - recursion, location of meaning etc :-)

The comments under the article are interesting too :-). I just found this link as I was going thru the comments on Dr. Ramachandran videos :-).

Yes One invokes myriads of comments for such statements. Basically Dr. Urgesi is calling 80% of the humans on this earth mentally retarded .

Scientists have identified areas of the brain that, when damaged, lead to greater spirituality. The findings hint at the roots of spiritual and religious attitudes, the researchers say.

We had a discussion some time ago regarding this. There are few problems with this study. First of all, how can they say that the experiences of the 'patients' are actually of philosophical in nature? When everyone knows that experiences are subjective, how can we relate experiences of a person to another? There is no objective quantification method in these kind of studies and science absolutely relies on such data. I have not read the original paper yet.

Second is that self-transcedence doesn't mean spiritual experience. Even the article says the same in the second para. These phenomenon have very many overlapping experiences and very difficult to differentiate them. Even if the experiences are same, there is a huge difference between a controlled and uncontrolled attainments of such stages.

FInally, if all the spiritual experiences are caused by damage to posterior parietal lobe of the brain, why are we not seeing other symptoms in the religious people? This area regulates eye and limb movements and why we are not seeing any dysfunctions related to them? Remember these subjects are all brain tumor patients and not normal subjects. I dont believe they would have used proper controls in the study which would be healthy humans!

Bottom line is that scientists need to be very careful in making such statements and leave the extrapolation part to the readers rather than crossing the boundaries of objectivity otherwise invalidating their scientific spirit by concluding that all they are trying is to hog the limelight. This particularly applies to nueroscientists.

I will watch Dr. Ramachandran's other videos soon.

I was more interested in the neurological accounts of some of the mental/spiritual phenomena. He tries to explain them at that level. I know the problem of qualia/self are not settled that is easily as they are ineffable subjective experiences. he tries to explain the neural representations of them.

There are more videos of him on these topics on youtube where he talks of blind sight n consciousness, split brain experiment, synesthesia, source of spiritual experiences etc.

Please check this too : Links to Spirituality Found in the Brain:

Consciousness,-Qualia ans self:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTWmTJALe1w

What Dr. Ramachandran is saying was already said by many yogis hundreds of years ago. He says Qualia and the self are one and the same and yogis said that the 'seer' is the 'seen' or the the perceptor is the object of perception. Its impossible to separate them. When you see a table it exists as of that moment and when you turn your head it disappears. For that moment you are the table. As he said only humans are capable of epistemological pursuits which makes our Qualia meta-reflexive.

There is nothing new in the other videos. One must understand that these kind of scientific theories can be put forward as arguments against christian beliefs which differ largely from hindu philosophical concepts. Hindu philosophy was not a mere blind collection of hypotheses either. They were the interpretations generated by logical analysis of individual qualia or subjective experiences. In essence the yogis were not only philosphers but also psychologists and neuroscientists.

Btw, welcome back I truly do enjoy these kind of scientific discussions with you. I often mention these discussions to neuroscientist postdoc friend of mine here and i always ask myself why am I not in to that faculty
