http://www.thefilmstreetjournal.com/2010/05/crash-of-kites-j umbo-budgets-under-the-scanner/

It’s not the films themselves that raise any doubts. It’s the huge money invested in them that raises important questions

On Thursday, as the media gathered at PVR, Juhu for the press show of the much-looked-forward-to Kites, the manager of the theatre looked harried. The demand for the paid previews of the film was so high that the management had to vacate another screen to accommodate the rush. Finally, at this one theatre alone, 5 screens had jam-packed paid preview shows of Kites to meet the demand. The management happily registered a must-see-this-film attendance of more than 80 per cent of their total capacity. But by the time the audience came out, tweets, SMSes and Facebook remarks had given their verdict: Kites had crash-landed.

On Friday, such a highly-awaited film did not witness a blockbuster opening. It was more of a good average and, instead of climbing over the weekend as most films do, the business of Kites saw a slide in the Saturday and Sunday collections with a sharp, steep fall from Monday onwards. During a casual visit to Fame and Cinemax theatres in Andheri West on Monday evening, both spots wore a desolate look. The counters were open, tickets were freely available (“As many as you want, madam”) and the youngsters coming in were heading straight for Shrek in its fourth avatar.

“Just like the plane that crashed recently, Kites has crash-landed,” said Manoj Desai who runs the G7 knots of theatres (Gemini, Gaiety, Galaxy etc). He added, “If you want me to describe the business of Kites I’d just say, kati patang.”

Trade analyst Komal Nahta who hosts ‘Bollywood Business’ on etc announced on his show that Reliance would lose in the region of Rs 30 crore on its investment of Rs 110 crore. The Roshans have romped home with very big money in their pockets, having wisely sold the worldwide rights to Reliance. But the fact remains that the setback of Kites will be a loss to both Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan as well, for they have certainly lost face in this particular race.

Some of the comments from critics include:

 Lack of on-screen chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara Mori

 Barbara Mori looks much older than Hrithik

 There is no story, no twists in it

 The climax is weak, it’s ultimately the story of a loser

 Hrithik is hardly heroic in the film

 It’s neither English nor Spanish nor a Hindi film but an incomprehensible mish-mash of all three languages

 It’s more lust at first sight than love

 What did the pair-on-the-run sacrifice for love? The money was never theirs in the first place

 You feel no empathy with the lovers

When you look closely at the figures, a loss of about Rs 30 crore means the film will ultimately manage an overall business of more than Rs 60-70 crore, which is not a figure to be pooh-poohed. Why Kites will still go down as a disastrous experiment is because of its pricing. If sold at a reasonable figure way below the
Rs 100 crore mark, Kites could have at least recovered its investment (which still doesn’t put it in the blockbuster or hit category).

It’s Hindi cinema’s recent obsession for breasting the Rs 100 crore mark that’s causing grief in the trade. After My Name Is Khan went under the hammer to 20th Century Fox for the much-bandied figure of nearly Rs 100 crore, and Fox lost about 1/5th its investment, Kites is the next over-priced film to puts its backers in the red.

1. My Name Is Khan went to 20th Century Fox for nearly Rs 100 crore; Fox lost 1/5th its investment
2. Apart from the watchable Ajay Devgn, Raajneeti also has lucky star Katrina Kaif and the bankable Ranbir Kapoor, making it an immensely potent starcast
3. A chunk of the recovery is slated to come from the South. The onus of bringing back much more than Rs 100 crore does not rest on the shoulders of the Hindi Raavan
4. Apart from Enthiran in Tamil, there will be dubbed versions going out everywhere, even a Japanese one

A quick look at the other biggies which are on the way to the theatres:

Raajneeti

Prakash Jha’s last two films, Gangajal and Apaharan had less than half the budget of Raajneeti. Importantly, although they were highly appreciated as gritty, hard-hitting cinema, neither Gangajal nor Apaharan were really blockbuster hits. In its making alone, Raajneeti has crossed the Rs 40 crore level; distribution, promotion, prints and publicity costs will take the figure northwards. In all fairness to Jha, apart from the watchable Ajay Devgn, Raajneeti also has lucky star Katrina Kaif and the bankable craze of the season, Ranbir Kapoor, making it an immensely potent starcast. Besides, as Jha points out, way back when he first drafted Raajneeti, there were seven main characters in the plot and it was the large canvas that demanded a high budget. The socio-political film which has already whipped up a lot of curiosity has a big-canvas feel and may just prove to be the one to breast the tape in an easy sprint at the box-office.

Raavan

This is Mani Ratnam’s and Abhishek Bachchan’s costliest film so far, crossing the Rs 100 crore figure. If Raajneeti is today’s Mahabharata, Raavan is the Ramayan, both winners ultimately. You never know with Mani Ratnam whose last film Guru was a slow starter but went on to be a success. In the case of Raavan, with a Tamil version also ready and dubbed Telugu prints on release, a chunk of the recovery is slated to come from the South itself. So it isn’t as if the onus of bringing back much more than Rs 100 crore rests on the shoulders of the Hindi Raavan alone.

Enthiran

It is Rajnikant and director Shankar’s most lavishly budgeted film ever, touching the Rs 150 crore mark. However, it is not the Hindi audience that is expected to fill Rajni’s coffers. He has a staunch following in Tamil Nadu and even as far as Japan. Shrewdly, apart from Enthiran in Tamil, there will be dubbed versions going out everywhere, even a Japanese one for the audience out there in the East.
