Hail_the_labour:Brain unnodu Competetion is OK antadu.
brother, okkokkari brain okkola pani chesthundi kada. some understand things quickly, some slowly. If you give a time line for two people to ocmplete a task, one will complete it and other might take little extra time. antha mathrana he cant be said brainless fellow vvadu kada. competition is very biased to such people. they are hardworking and industrious, but people with inherent smartness always win over the others during school and college days. But if you see teh great scientists of world, they are not the fastest thinkers and tehy rarely excelled in school, but they became the best because they were the most perseverant compared to others. Things like that have to be encouraged. Plus inherent interest ayithe totally irrelevant in India. If you are from AP, be a software engineer - rule of thumb now a days. family pressure, society pressure and peer pressure. how many pressures a man can endure? Cocanada: especially some parents like to show off their kids' achievements. it really creates a bad environment in the family
Yes. Its bad for everyone in the long run. Such attitude creates a sense of false ego around children and once they fail in future, they cant handle it and might even go in to depression. I have seen many people like that. Right on, you nailed it absolutely. Funny how you bring this up. Yesterday, we were watching Maa TV's "Lady Boss" program. There were three participants and they were given four or five telugu movie names with missing letters (in telugu), they have to fill them out. Only one contestant filled ONE movie name. All of them said they do not know telugu. Idi mana dhourbhagyam. :-( |

I am of the same opinion bro, i feel making English the language that is used for teaching other subjects is not correct. Mental_sachinodu:bro, it is not whether there should be competitions, and the reason for the competitive structure in india, I am taking about the reason for an individual to get motivated about something he wants to achieve. Competition is inherent in survival, and we cannot escape it, but what is the deliberate reason, that an individual tries to take up something or tries to excel in something. is it for a passion to be better than the rest of everybody, or to be better than himself?
What a coincidence, me and my wife had this same discussion couple of weeks ago. In a ideal situation, we all should strive to pursue what we like. This results in us being happy mentally and lead to a purposeful life. With our lives being so fast and so complicated, I doubt it works out this way. |

there you go, nenu ee thread start cheyataniki kooda one of the reasons is this confusion. both the approaches have some great examples that you can use to support the approach, and it worked great in both ways. Was just wondering how many feel the way i do, and how many feel the need for passion behind the things they pick up. another thing of note, when i started this thread, it was not just for careers, it could be anything you do in your life. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |

Tammi, anything wrong with introducing your kids to your own culture? Kids at a tender age do not know what they like and don't like. You have to introduce things (be it arts, food, books, everything) to them and see how they react. That is the only way to know that they like and don't like. Do you realize karate gives kids self confidence (boys or girls)? It is very essential for kids in this country to survive with so much bullying that goes around in schools.
Mrhyderabad:Most of desi kids are forced to for medicine...
This was a thing with first generation indians here. Doubt if it is still happening. |

//Most of desi kids are forced to for medicine.// hyder, some of the successful passionate Americans - Williams sisters, tiger woods, Michael Jackson, Andre Agaasi. [They all acknowledge they were pushed by their dads] I agree with you on the desis pushing their kids. It would be good if they expose their kids to many things and see what the kid likes rather than what they like. The other thing one has to consider that the % of people doing stuff out of sheer passion is relatively less. So sometimes the push by parents looks okay. Damn, I am confused now. |

Humpty bro, yes, most say this, and somehow it does not gel well with me. I guess that passion to be above everyone else is what I lack. Though doing a job can be attributed to passion only, measurement of success and failure is inevitable. Bill gates might have been passionate in his work but the results do show he was successful. Beating competition is also a passion in itself. It just shows your desire to be the best at what you can do. Somehow success or failure ( relative) reflects the degree of passion. @coke //But if your goal is weight loss, then you dont compete with anyone// I disagree with this. Why does one need to loose weight. other than health, the obvious thing for me is to look good as some hunk or shilpa shetty. You are thereby setting the bench mark for yourself and will be measuring your efforts against it. |

that is what exactly my question is, what are you aiming at? Aiming at getting a better score that some person you know, may be your cousin who scored 250. or is it make it to the best schools, or is it to test yourself. in my case, my motivation was to see how many questions i could get right. i was not sure what my rank was going to be, and certainly did not worry about which colleges to join. my teachers asked me to appear for many other CETs in india, and I appeared only for Eamcet, my next criteria was to get into a college that is near to my place(due to family constraints). the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |

you are always competing with others where the no. of opportunities are limited e.g. promotion, EAMCET, job interviews etc But if your goal is weight loss, then you dont compete with anyone. you HAVE TO compete with others most of the time (Message edited by cocanada on May 24, 2010) Simha is conceptually hollywood range film - OT |

In a world where we measure ourselves with relative comparisons, do you feel you are competing with someone, in each arena of your life. I was never a person who wanted to excel in a competition so i could be at the top, I believe in doing something only out of passion for it, and i believe success/failure is just a state of mind, and you should define it for yourselves. I seem to irk quite a few nerves when i discuss with others, and I find most people disagree with me on this. Some of my close friends, feel the need of competition to excel at a particular task, and while i find it validating, and an approach that works, I could not find myself being able to motivate enough with that approach. To me, if i am competing against someone, it is myself. I perfectly understand that each have their own way of approach towards life, I just wanted to share here, and see what you guys think about it. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |
