Hyderabad, May 15: The Praja Rajyam president, Mr K. Chiranjeevi's move to field a candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections despite the lack of requisite strength of the MLA has created differences in the party.

Mr Chiranjeevi, who expected Congress support, apparently received a cold shoulder.

Sources said that the Pradesh Congress Committee president, Mr D. Srinivas, who discussed Praja Rajyam Party plea to back its candidate, was rejected by the Congress High Command. In the wake of this development, Mr Chiranjeevi is now having second thoughts on the issue.

A section of the party leaders has opposed the fielding of a candidate as it has only 18 MLAs and a defeat could lead to loss of face.

In fact, the actual strength of the PRP is only 16 now since two MLAs from the Telangana region - Mr Maheshwar Reddy and Mr Anil, quit the party protesting against the anti-Telangana stand taken by the PRP.

Sources in the party said that even the talk Mr Chiranjeevi had with senior party leaders like Mr C. Ramachandraiah and others about fielding his brother-in-law, Mr Allu Arvind, did not go well.

A senior party leader said that propping up Mr Allu Arvind at a time when the party is trying to put its house in order will create further rift in the party. Some seniors reportedly questioned Mr Chiranjeevi at the party's political affairs committee meeting at Rajahmundry as to how he could field a candidate when at least 41 MLAs are required to ensure a win.

The Congress circles have denied a truce with Mr Chiranjeevi on the issue till date. "We don't know if an understanding has been reached between the Congress and the PRP on the Rajya Sabha seat in the wake of Chiru's decision to contest. The Congress itself is in a tight position in view of the limited seats and a large number of aspirants," a senior Congress leader said.
