An investigative journalism story by Associated Fools Press:

Historians are divided on the identity of the first person who started this trend, but all of them do agree that it is probably Oprah who should be blamed for the sudden onslaught on Twitter by the celebrities of the world.

Thankfully India had remained cautiously passive for a long time consuming the tiny but incredibly powerful 140 character sensation but not contributing to the phenomenon.

Of late, however, Indian celebrities have realized that Twitter is something unique and that it offers a direct channel of communication with the people that are solely responsible for the celebrity status they are enjoying.

So every Tom, Dick and Harry (Or must we say - Hari) has a Twitter account now. And they are using it to the fullest extent. Imagine this. The God of Indian Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar wished a follower - best of luck - for the school examination. The boy was so thrilled that he actually forgot about the examination and missed it. This news clogged all the headlines in the country for a day.

"It is creating sort of a mass hysteria" says Dr. John Doe, University of Criminology, Neverfoundland, "The issue is: whether these twitter users know how to conduct themselves on Twitter? Whatever you say - immediately reaches your followers. Is it a good thing? Maybe. Is it a bad thing? May as well be."

There are anecdotes aplenty of the unenviable consequences of what people tweet. A case in point is the Telugu movie industry (affectionately called Tollywood by people in Andhra Pradesh - a name they hijacked mercilessly from the West Bengal industry.). Every star worth his or her salt is on Twitter, talking about everything under the sun. This industry is rife with caste considerations. People of the same caste flock together and leave no stone unturned to demean people belonging to the other castes.

With this new found freedom of Twitter, a lot of such knee jerk comments and reactions are reaching the public without getting filtered by the sane minds of the industry. The result? An explosive war of words between factions and fans of their screen idols going berserk.

"Look at any Telugu movie fans DB" John Doe says, "A while ago, it was all tranquil and sedate. Discussions used to happen on multiple subjects and there had been fights but only during the first one week of any major movie's release. But now, everyday little else is discussed. 'What they said on Twitter' is probably the most discussed topic in the DBs today."

The fans need to realize that there would be many more such 140 character messages libelous in nature but losing sleep over it is not a good idea because sleep, in that case, would attain a status of "endangered entity".

However, we must give it to Twitter for proving that the celebrities are idiots too - just like you and me.
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.
