Smiles, genuine and fake, and the great cover-up
Mahesh Chauhan, 12 April 2010, 09:28 PM IST

How to distinguish a genuine smile from a fake one? Well, just look at the eyes. In a genuine smile, the eyes will also smile. Eyes smile? Yes, as tears roll down your eyes when you cry, the eyes are also the best indicator of a genuine smile.

In a made-up smile, one may just order one's lips to stay put in curved form or maybe show a few teeth looking out of the window of the mouth, but there would be no show of smile at the outer corners of eyes.

In a genuine smile, which comes from the heart, the outer corners of eyes come to life and show a typical pattern of folds, simultaneously occurring along with the lip curvature going up. The eyes gleam and appear more pleasant like "lotus eyes" of Lord Vishnu.

In sustained laughter or moments of inner joy, tears of joy roll down the cheeks, which is a sure sign of a genuine happiness.

Some people put their hands in front of their mouths when they smile. I am not sure why. The reasons could be following:
1. They don’t want to show the world that they are happy.
2. They have halitosis (bad breath), and are concerned about the environment.
3. They have bad gums, bad teeth, and loads of calculus and tartar stains.
4. They have one tooth missing.
5. They have several teeth missing.
6. They are not confident about themselves.

Very rarely if at all have I seen an elderly person having no teeth at all cover their mouth when smiling. Perhaps after you have seen it all you don’t care about what others may think of you and the art of being oneself has been learnt.

Almost never a fake smiler will cover their mouth while smiling. So at least the people who cover their mouths while smiling are smiling genuinely. No matter if their smile is like a classified document only for them to enjoy. But never mind. Now you can look at the eyes and tell it all.
