Vjavasi:.twaralo telusukuntaaru edhi priority no...debba tagalakunda ekkada marataru manavallu
this inflation won't stop here it will spread and push up the cost of manufacturing goods and services as a result commodity prices climb as a whole our economy is going to dogs ..it is time to our policy makers to shift their priorities and concentrate on concerned areas like Agriculture .. |

Now we are almost at an equal platform in terms of technology and human resources with rest of the world....we should work on making our economy more dependent on internal demand and agro related activities than focussing on expo oriented growth...instead of stacking foreign exchange we can work on a strategy to clear our external debt in the next ten years....there should be moratorium on unnecessasary external loans |

Vjavasi: so they are designing killer seeds.....how can govts allow that...they are more dangerous than terrorists
right now this technology has not been commercialized by monasanto(this is an area of contention with opponents saying they are using this technology and monasanto saying it is not) and also the govt banned the use of such technology...well its nicknamed terminator technology |

Guttonkay: I agree that we need to increase our agricultural yields, but are you saying we should move towards genetically engineered crops? I just don't think there is enough research on these on how they affect the ecosystem and aquatic systems in the long term.
again the term genetically engineered crops doesnt necessarily apply to only BT crops where a gene is engineered to act as a toxin to a certain pest...manipulating the chromosome of any plant can lead to diff scenarios such as larger grain size or increasing the protein content in the grain or physical aspects like shorter length of the stem which will be effective in times of heavy winds or rains ...again these too need to be studied considering that we are implanting genes from a totally diff genus into another genus....i agree that most genetically engineered crops these days have been targeted against pests which is a subject of controversy |

Vjavasi:what kind of research we need in agriculture?
primarily we need research to improve crop yield to maximize the per acre cost of production for the farmer ...next comes drought resistant/pest resistant crops and finally the commercial uses for cash crops like oil producing plants needs to thoroughly improved and better storage facilities for the crop produced....we have research institutes to study these areas but how much are we utilizing is debatable...when we use every part of a plant successfully then the cost of production decreases
Vjavasi:why should farmers care about the research of monsanto..can't they use their own seeds...if they are trained properly they can even do research on their own
In india farmers still use their own seeds but advent of BT crops will reduce this trend bcoz the seed of BT crops is itself designed as such....well farmers can do their own research and they do but its rudimentary like crossing two species to increase output or size or color of the grains as such....the progress of agriculture has moved from such basic techniques bcoz we have used them to a maximum during the first green revolution which was based on traditional cross breeding techniques nowadays we have to engineer crops using molecular techniques such as altering the gene structure or adding new genes to make them resistant which needs a higher education and better infrastructure or atleast interaction with agri scientists |

what kind of research we need in agriculture?

why we need an export oriented growth?.....why should we exchange our fruits, cotton, milk, sugar, meat, minerals other finished products to walmart and other corporatuions outside india for paper dollars....even if we need paper dollars to import oil and some machinary we again use that oil and machines to earn more and more paper dollars....why can't we focus on a self sufficient economy with minimum external dependence |

Vjavasi:if this is true...food production anedhi mana society ki main occupation kindha vundali kadha...mari engineering and related courses ki enduku antha avasarani kante ekkuva importance istunnaru...it's a flawed policy kadha
we take agriculture and food production for granted....we realize the need only when there is shortage of rice/wheat and in the short term import something and sweep the problem under the rug.....and coming to engineering and related developments as again its the market that's driving the development...u can see how much variation there is between the progress in computer and electronic related sectors compared to traditional ones like civil/mechanical... the same cannot be said about agri-based research...its mostly done by GOVT agencies and they are lagging behind in research and innovation bcoz they are not profitable in the market sense and the govt cannot put the burden on farmers....if u look at monasanto the progress they have made is amazing and at the same time farmers have no option but to put up with monsanto...when it comes to agriculture the entire issue of globalization/privatization is a double-edged sword... |
