Now, a fatwa adds to Shoaib, Sania woes TNN, Apr 12, 2010, 03.01am IST HYDERABAD: A fatwa issued by the Sunni Ulema board in Hyderabad on Sunday has further added to Sania Mirza’s pre-marital woes. The fatwa, which claims that it is un-Islamic for a man and woman to live under the same roof before nikah, directly hits out at the tennis star and her groom-to-be Shoaib Malik who has been staying at the Mirza residence for over a week now. The two are officially scheduled to tie the knot on April 15. According to the fatwa, true followers of Islam do not subscribe to such ‘unacceptable’ behaviour as displayed by the cricketer and his fiancee over the last few days. It terms such proximity between a couple, who are yet to get married, as "shameful" and against the teachings of Islam. Further, the fatwa also ridicules Sania for not observing the ‘purdah’, which the board feels is a must for pre-wedding celebrations, according to Islam. "It is un-Islamic for a man and woman to see each other during the ceremonies conducted before the ‘nikah’. Therefore, what they (Sania and Shoaib) are doing is not correct," said Hasibul Hassan, general secretary of the board quickly adding, "But the fatwa has not been issued against any individual in particular. We are against all such marriages that do not follow the rules of the religion." Apart from the duo, the fatwa also hits out at those invited for the reception on April 15. According to it, those who participate in such weddings are equally un-Islamic and not "true followers of the religion". "We cannot do anything if people decide to be part of it (the wedding). But they will sure be punished for their act some day," Hassan said, clearly asking the Muslim community to abstain from being part of the Sania-Shoaib wedding party. Meanwhile, the Mirzas, on Sunday evening, issued a clarification saying that Shoaib was not "living with the bride for the last few days". The statement released by Sania’s family said that there was some "misunderstanding" among people and only members of the groom’s family were living in the Mirza residence. While the release had no mention of the fatwa, it was evident that the Mirzas issued the statement in reaction to what had happened earlier in the day. | ||

'Fatwa' against Sania, Shoaib for living together before marriage PTI, Apr 11, 2010, 05.50pm IST HYDERABAD: Tennis star Sania Mirza's marriage with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik has sparked another row with some religious scholars issuing a 'fatwa' or religious edict against their living and mingling freely even before the marriage is solemnised. Sunni Ulema Board, a group of religious scholars, said both the sportspersons were bringing disrepute to Islam and Muslim community through their actions. The board issued a 'fatwa' terming their actions 'haram' (forbidden) and asked Muslims to stay away from the April 15 marriage. "The kind of actions the two are indulging in like living together and addressing media together are 'haram' in Islam," said Moulana Haseebul Hasan Siddiqui, a religious scholar. Shoaib has been staying at Sania's residence here for more than a week and television pictures showed them dancing and doing physical exercises together. "Islam permits a man and woman to see each other only once before marriage and it does not allow them to live together and indulge in this sort of activities before marriage," he said. He felt that all the actions of Sania and Shoaib were bringing a bad name to Islam and the Muslim community and advised invitees to stay away from their marriage as men and women would mingle freely there in total disregard of Islamic principles. "Muslims should stay away from such gatherings where men and women mingle freely in violation of Islamic principles," he said. The religious scholar had also issued a 'fatwa' against Sania Mirza for favouring pre-marital sex three years ago. He had opined that Sania committed a big sin by promoting 'zina' (fornication). The tennis ace, however, denied making the remarks. Shoaib has already come under criticism from clergy for denying marriage with Ayesha Siddiqui even after admitting that he signed the 'nikahnama'. The Pakistani star last week divorced Ayesha after the latter filed a case of cheating against him. |
