Strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake hits off hits off Andaman Islands; no tsunami warning

PORT BLAIR, INDIA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake at 10.24 p.m. local time was centered about 217 km (135 miles) north from Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, India, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It struck about 45.4 kilometers (28.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake.

No tsunami warnings were issued.
