Treat North Andhra separately, says forum

Special Correspondent. …..

‘More than 53 p.c. people of the 3 districts are BCs without special provisions'

Threat not to allow panel members to tour the region

Territorial council on the lines of Bodoland sought

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Uttarandhra Rakshana Vedika, espousing the cause of three North Andhra districts viz., Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, wants the Sri Krishna Committee to treat North Andhra, comprising the three districts, as a separate region and not as part of coastal Andhra Pradesh. The culture, traditions and dialect of people of these districts, which over the years had been subjected to neglect and remained backward, are distinct and hence the feelings and aspiration of the people should be considered separately, said Vedika president S.S. Siva Sankar and secretary DVT Ganesh. The Committee members have been talking about only three regions in the State.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, Mr. Siva Sankar asserted that unless the Committee recognised North Andhra as a separate region and took the latter's views separately, the Vedika would not allow the Committee members to tour these parts. He said that more than 53 per cent of people in the three districts were BCs, but they had no concessions or special provisions. The Vedika wanted a territorial council to be formed on the lines of Bodoland in West Bengal for ensuring development of the three districts. Regulations on the lines of Mulki Rules should also be formulated for the North Andhra region, he said.

Extension of the proposed Petro Corridor between Kakinada and Visakhapatnam up to Itchapuram in Srikakulam district and expeditious completion of Polavaram project for ensuring irrigation and drinking water requirements of people in these parts were the other demands of Vedika.
