here the problem is not artistic freedom but pseudo-secularism...MFH always has guts to paint nude pictures of goddesses or bharat mata or whatever but he never dares paint allah even in full clothes..he knows the consequences ..when you think u r art is more important paint it on a wider canvas with all religions...you cannot take liberties with one religion and not with others...the cartoons of propher mohammed cannot be held to a diff set of rules and the cartoonist punished and mobs vandalising be taken as public reaction to blasphemy...then what happened to MFH is also justified and the Bajrang dal RSS VHP people can be classified as devotees upset....also why should art always be depicted in nude when you know the present society is not so liberal...even in USA artistic liberty has always had problems when someone depicts mother mary in nude or some apostle with a fig leaf on his dick... bottomline is vandalism, intimidation is always wrong whether its MFH or tasleema nasreen....this should be stopped | ||

achilles, whatever you see on our temple walls are not devullu. vallu yakshulu, gandharvulu etc etc. I don't think I ever saw a temple wall (haven't been to khajuraho) where the gods we pray to are depicted naked. MFH might have done some great paints, might have painted ramayana, mahabharata etc. But point is at some point he did paint some inflammatory stuff. When you live in a secular country where there is a lot of communal tensions, you have to walk a tight rope. Unfortunately MFH didn't. It's normal for people to praise someone when they good things and criticize them when they do something insensitive. Of course good/bad is all relative. Bottomline is you sow, you reap. MFH should've known that before he chose to paint indian gods in the nude. | ||

"When Sangh Parivar outfits targeted me, all kept silent. No one, including political leadership, artists or intellectuals came forward to speak for me. But I know the fact that 90 per cent of the people of India love me. They are with me," he said. "Only 10 per cent of people, including some politicians, are against me," Husain said. Husain has dozens of lawsuits against him across the country for his paintings of goddesses that some Hindus find sacrilegious. The artist has been living abroad as a fugitive since 2006. He said he was not worried as people across the world love him. "India's continuing governments could not protect me. So, it is very difficult for me to stay in such a country. Politicians are eyeing only votes." "Now, they are asking me to come back. I was in exile...There was no one to speak for me. No governments recalled me. Now they are asking me to return after one country offered me citizenship. How can I trust a political leadership that refused to protect me?" he said. "Is there any surety that I would be given protection in India?" Husain asked. He stressed that the cases against him went against an artist's self-expression, and maintained that he did not want to hurt anyone's sentiments. "It is a move against art and the artist's self-expression. I never intended to hurt anyone's sentiments through the art," he said. "I only expressed my soul's creativity through art. Art's language is universal language. People who love it beyond all narrow viewpoints are my strength," he said. "I enjoy complete freedom in Qatar. Now Qatar is my place.
