Governor to play Holi with cops!
TNN, Feb 26, 2010, 05.59am IST

HYDERABAD: Once a policeman, always a policeman. In line with this, governor E S L Narasimhan has decided to play Holi this time with officers of the police force. The secretary of the IPS Officers Association on Thursday invited all the members to Raj Bhavan on March 1 between 10 -11 am stating: “The Governor and Lady Governor desire to have the company of serving IPS officers along with family to exchange colours on the occasion of Holi.”

Cops are very happy to receive this message because they see Narasimhan as one of their own. Yet, some of them were circumspect. “We like it, but I don’t know whether it sets a good precedent. Inviting schoolchildren and different sections of society is one thing, but singling out police officers for this honour is quite another,” said a senior IPS officer. He added: “This does not send out a good message to society at large.”

The proposed Holi milan of Narasimhan adds a new dimension to his activities in Andhra Pradesh. In recent days, he has been in the news for his penchant for visiting temples across the state and the city with his better half in tow. Initially, he was in news for calling for review meetings with senior police officers and secretaries of various government departments. Many of the meetings have been without the knowledge of the chief minister. “The governor’s office has been directly calling officers for a meeting. The officers not very sure of the emerging power structure have also avoided telling the chief minister about these review meetings,” a civil service officer pointed out.

But analysts pointed out that Narasimhan is still unable to downplay his background as an intelligence man (he retired as director of Intelligence Bureau) and wants to meet people to gather information. “He is seeking sources. Even the Holi function probably is designed to acquaint him with more police officials who can become his sources later,” an analyst speculated.
