A scientist with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was found dead, believed murdered, in his quarters on Monday night.

Mahadevan Iyer, 48 and an engineer, had a head injury, and a “synthetic string with traces of blood” around his neck. Police believe he had died two days before the body was found. Neighbours at BARC’s quarters at Anand Bhawan, Breach Candy, had been alerted by the stench.

Iyer, who lived alone, was initially believed to have committed suicide but the Mumbai Police today registered a case of murder following the post-mortem report. The body had been found “in a suspicious manner”, the police said.

The door was locked from the outside, there was no sign of struggle and police suspect the hand of someone known to the scientist.

“A neighbour opened the door with a duplicate key and found the body on the bed. The post-mortem found that Iyer had suffered a haemorrhage in the head, which could be because of an injury to the head. We are now probing the case as one of murder,” said Himanshu Roy, JCP (Law and Order).

The police said part of the string around the neck was tied to one hand. Prima facie, the police say, they suspect the hand of someone known to the scientist. “The manner in which the body was found indicate that there was no struggle. A second aspect is that the house was locked from outside, indicating that it has to be someone who had access and left the house locked after the crime,” said an officer.

Iyer had lived in the quarter for seven years. His mother, who lives in suburbs, and his sister claimed his body. Iyer reportedly has two brothers, one of whom, Mahesh, 42, is a professor in a college in Nashik.

PTI quoted the police as saying that nothing was stolen from the house. The agency said the police also went through the log book of visitors at the building and went to BARC at Trombay to enquire about Iyer.}
