well if I have say 10$ and want to invest in 10 MSFT at 1$and hold that for 3 months...U come in with a 1 million capital and just short sell shares worth a million today at 1$ each and buy back the stock tommorow at .7$ and and then invest the remaining 0.3 million again to buy at 0.7 and sell for 0.8..and so on and so forth...one can realise infinite amounts of money..... SEC regualtes the amount of short selling by putting a lower cap on either the max fall of a tradable entity or the market capitalization | ||

Short sellers or any one in general with leverage are people who have a view on market and if unchecked can corner the market. These are typically called Market Makers. Cornering the market is a fraud per the SEC rules beyond a certian amount. Having said that there are some correlated trades which in the long run create arbitrage...opps | ||

Annai...quant is the short form for Quantitative Analyst....there are these types in the respective order of importance in an Investment Bank: Quant trader: executes trades based on the model and his trade philosophy: Typically earns about half a million to a million an year Front Office Quant: Vets the model and laises between Middle Office quant and Risk groups...along with traders sometimes. They make sure that the models give you the leverage they seek.... in the bracket of 350-650K an year Middle Office Quant People who actually build the models...they dont have any say in trading decisions. put the risks in the derivative on the table and include them in the model and price those risks fairly. Typically: 200K-500K Back Office Quant: People who do quant development and programming....generally PhD not rq for this role.... Typically: 95K- 200K | ||
