Karachi, Feb. 1: A defiant Shahid Afridi Monday made a startling allegation that every team indulges in ball-tampering and it should be legalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) with the changing rules of the game. âThere is no team in the world that doesnât tamper with the ball,â Afridi said while defending himself. âThe game and its rules are changing and you should be allowed to tamper with the ball after the 30th or 40th over,â Afridi was quoted as saying in a television footage that has surfaced after his ban for two Twenty20 Internationals for a ball-tampering charge during the fifth ODI against Australia in Perth Sunday. âIt spells death for bowlers if you donât tamper with the ball⦠You can get some help from the pitch but even then you have to âmakeâ the ball,â Afridi was witnessed admitting in the same footage. Defending his ball-tampering act while talking to local media, Afridi said, âOnly (a) few get to do some bit of ball tampering. If the weather is dry and hot then you can get some help from the pitch while bowling. You have to tamper with the ball to make it swing (on sub-continental pitches).â He in fact went to the extent of saying that ball-tampering should be legalised by the ICC. âThe game and its rules are changing. You should be allowed to tamper with the ball after the 30th or 40th over,â he said. However, soon after he was charged for ball tampering Afridi had said all he was trying to do was to smell the ball while coach Intikhab Alam wondered why he was acting âlike eating an appleâ. âI tried to smell it. There was some things on it that I tried to move,â Afridi told ABC Radio. âI donât know what happened to me that made me do such a mad thing. It was not right and I apologise for my actions to everyone. What happened was very unfortunate and should not have happened,â he said. âBeing the captain I should have been a role-model for my players which I was not, but I hope I will be forgiven,â he added. Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said Afridiâs actions were unacceptable. âIt is unfortunate, he (Afridi) has accepted it that he should not have done it. It is unacceptable, it should not have happened â I feel sorry for him, being a captain you should be above everything. It just happened, like he was eating an apple. I have no idea (what he was trying to achieve),â he said. Meanwhile, former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq lashed out at Afridi and said the all-rounder was extremely fortunate to have escaped with just a two-match ban. âWhat Afridi did was unacceptable and more worrying is the fact that he was the captain when he tried to tamper with the ball. He didnât do any good service to Pakistan cricket with his actions,â Inzamam added. âThe match referee Ranjan Madugalle has been kind to Afridi, giving him just a two-match ban or else Afridi could have been in bigger trouble,â he went on to add.
