One River, Two Colours: Godavari Meets Krishna at Vijayawada A remarkable contrast is visible in the Krishna River at Vijayawada. With hardly any natural Krishna inflows reaching Prakasam Barrage, nearly 6,000 cusecs of Godavari water lifted through the Pattiseema scheme currently support irrigation and drinking water needs in the Krishna Delta. The latest drone visuals capture the story vividly: sediment laden Godavari water appears reddish brown upstream of the barrage, while the relatively clearer, older Krishna water downstream shows a distinctly bluish tone. Two shades of water in the same river stretch — a striking visual of how Godavari water is sustaining the Krishna Delta when the Krishna itself has little water to offer at Vijayawada. At Vijayawada’s Prakasam Barrage, the Krishna River does not usually look like this. Even during flood flows, the river normally retains its characteristic appearance. But this year presents a very different picture. The water stored at the barrage now has a distinct reddish brown, sediment laden appearance a sight more familiar to people in the Godavari districts. This year, however, Krishna Delta residents are seeing that same colour in the Krishna River and Godavari water brought through Pattiseema is helping meet their irrigation and drinking-water needs.
