didnt pay any duty. Pretty much pleaded with them mentioning functions and girls in the family. They said they are letting us go this time but said wont promise it will be same next time and suggested to follow appraisal as the permanent solution. | ||

I posted about issues with carrying large amount of jewelry few weeks ago. Consensus was that there won't be any issue/limit in carrying personal jewelry and few suggested to ask customs people to write items in passport. Here is my experience. Indian customs immediately pulled me up. They said it doesn't matter if it's personal jewelry but the rule is you shouldn't carry more than 1 lakh worth. Beyond that you need to pay duty. I reasoned I am attending family functions, my family has female majority but they won't listen. Asked them to list items on passport, they say it's not a solution and asked me to declare the total value. Tried to reason more but they say they are just implementing the rules. Showed them the invitations and plead with them and they finally gave up. No they didn't take any money. So, what's the solution? Either you should insure your jewelry and carry that pre-dated insurance letter. Or appraise your jewelry by government approved jewelry appraiser and submit the document with customs once and free forever. Worried about customs on return trip as well but luckily customs was lenient here. Going to insure the jewelry as high priority now |
