I was in UK couple of months ago. Friend's kid is 10 years old. Darling of her teachers. Pretty popular kid too. Stafford area. Place and crowd matter I guess. Worked with a German and a Brit on that trip. Brit took us to Glouc and showed us around. Very hospitable. Took us to those Harry Potter buildings (schools where they shot the movie). German guy dropped us at Heathrow (2 hours drive). Really nice guy. Have no complaints whatsoever while I was there. May be, living there will probably change my perception. | ||

I see your point buddy. In our area, the public schools are not that great. So, we chose to send our son to private school. The school which he goes to is exact opposite to the environment you are experiencing. Is is 70% asian and 30% white. Its a choice we made to give him - better environment and network. There is a significant population from social housing etc in our areas and if I send my little one to local public shool, he is most likely going to the same school with those kids. I am not trying to be harsh against those kids, but their parents. How old is/are your kids when you moved to UK if you dont mind me asking? My son is currently in Year 1. I was fortunate enough to move long time back and he was born here in UK. So, it made things little easy in my case. I can understand your worry about their identity - whether they identify themselves as Indian or British. I am positive things will get better as they grow up. They will get their own friends circle eventually and by the time they come to college, they will see this as their home and they will mould into the life style here. I agree to some extent. Where I live is predominantly white with just about 10% of the class being Asian. Initially I thought maybe it was due to my kid not talking to the others - due to perhaps being at an inferior level in English than her classmates. However, when I talked to the other Asian parents, who have been here since ages and whose kids are born and brought up here, they share the same opinion. White kids don't mingle with Asian kids. We tried to fix this by inviting everyone to a birthday party. They all came, played among themselves, wished my kid birthday and left. A month later, when one of them had a birthday - she invited the entire class except of course my kid and the other Asian kids. It was sort of a revelation for me. And a clear message that my kids will face this every day in the UK - now and when they grow up too. Just worried that they end up not having any identity. (Feeling attached to their country/place - Not India, Not UK)

First and foremost regarding parents in India, this is a common problem with all first generation migrants in the family. Someone somewhere must make this sacrifice regarding balance between children's future and parents. Thankfully your children will not have this problem when they grow up as hopefully you would have gotten PR/citizenship by then. Then do not need to worry about your medical expenses, not worry about parents living in another country, will be able to give grandparents-grandchildren relationship experience to their kids. Its all win-win for future generations. So, just think about what you are setting up for your children. In my case, my parents are in Hyderabad and I have been in UK for the past 12 years. I usually bring them here every year in summer around June/July and they are here for 5 months on average. So, they avoid Indian summer and UK winter. This is better than me travelling to India for 3 weeks. For the same money you can bring them to UK for 5 months every year. I live near London and I do not see any issue with white people. I think its just misconception about north/south. I would prefer South any day due to weather and more mixed crowd than anywhere else in UK. None of my friends whose kids went to normal schools complained about such things like white people not talking to you. One thing you need to realize is that its a two way communication. Dont expect them to be friendly without you also approaching them and make an effort to speak to them and get to know them. I have friends in British/Indian/Pakistani circle and dont see any issues. It depends largely in the area you live in, in terms of school options. Indian school education from 1-10 to UK education is no comparison. UK is way better. Ofcourse this is subjective and not all Indians agree. I am not a fan of Indian education system, so there would be some bias in my opinion but when I see the things my little one is learning/doing in the school, there is no comparison to how I learned in my school India. I can even say I haven't really learned anything meaningful in my school. You are certainly right to some extent about grammar school. This is the attitude Indians bring with them from India. The pressure is simply from the Indian/Asian parents. My son is in Year 1 and whenever I go to any birthday parties, all Indian parents talk about grammar schools (mind you all the parents I am referring are parents of Year 1) and it amuses me. It is crazy. Indian parents need to change their attitude a bit. Just try and choose a good school and if they didn't get into grammar, that is absolutely fine. Nothing to fret about. This is UK and no dearth for opportunities. You are also correct about children simply not able to go out and play by themselves and need to arrange play dates. That is not a massive issue in my opinion. Some people are lucky to have same age group kids in their neighborhood and they still go out and play. You are also correct in them being more dependent on you. However, see it as a positive thing. You can spend super quality time with your children than you can ever in India. You can do so many awesome things with your children here that you just cant do in India. In summers, we do cycling on weekends as family and sometimes our friends also tag along. We also do things like indoor wall climbing, ice skating, go to swimming, hiking, parks etc. These are things that need not be very expensive if you do your research. Bottomline entante as a first generation migrant in your family, you are setting up great future for your children ani anukoni munduku povatame. | ||

Family mainly in India or the US. Ikkada evaro okariddharu thappithe there's no one. Savings - perfect zero. Paycheck to paycheck. No house, no own car. Everything is frigging expensive. Not much of assimilation with the local crowd. (It is probably because of us. No pointing fingers at anyone). Kids also facing that groupism at school. (Tellollu not talking/mingling with them etc) Intentionally cut down on travel a lot. Most meetings - opting for skype meetings instead of traveling. Started coming to office at least once a week. Work-life balance super. Kaanee nothing that sets me apart in the organization. So dispensable resource. No idea how long this will continue. Kids ki undue pressure education wise. Grammar school entrance - gumpulo govindaa ani all Indians go for this. Otherwise you end up in a school with a large tella population who apparently don't talk to you. I don't know if it is a misconception. But primary school lo we see it in action now. Apartheid. Not just for our kids. All Indian kids where I live. Same observation by other parents who have been here for decades. Aa grammar school entrance ki 3 hours a day chadavaali - 10 year old kids ki intha Narayana/Chaitanya type pressure - expect cheyyaledhu. India lo at least you are shielded from all this till Class X. Positives ante - naaku cold/flu attacks baagaa thaggaayi. In general health profile is much better. Same with my son too.
