He has further added that he "regrets" his comments in which he had said that "Supreme Court said Chowkidar ne chori ke hai (Supreme Court said that Chowkidar is involved in a theft)". Rahul Gandhi on Monday replied to the contempt plea filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, in the Supreme Court on April 12, seeking contempt proceedings against the Congress president for attributing his remarks on the recent Rafale verdict to the apex court. Responding to Rahul Gandhi's admission, Meenakshi Lekhi stated that she is "satisfied" with his statement, "to the extent that she said he made a false statement". On Friday, speaking in the matter, Meenakshi Lekhi took down Rahul Gandhi over the contempt of the top court in his media addressing, for attributing to the Supreme Court what it had never said in its order on the Rafale deal order of April 10. Meenakshi Lekhi in her plea had said that the Congress president has attributed his personal remarks to the top court and tried to create prejudice. "All the statements that are coming in the public through media recording and publications, we have annexed all of that. Repeatedly an attempt has been made by Rahul Gandhi to replace to own words as court's verdict. It this is not contempt, that too a criminal contempt of court, then what else will be. That is misquoting, misrepresenting the facts in public and making allegations and accusations about the Supreme Court order and it is for this reason the contempt has been filed today, which has been listed for Monday. I am grateful that the court has taken it up," Meenakshi Lekhi said. On April 15, the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi heard the petition in the top court and made the following observation: "The views attributed to this court in the address made by Rahul Gandhi to the media and public has been incorrectly attributed to the court. Supreme Court at no occasion recorded any such views or made any such observations. What was decided by the court was legal admissibility of certain documents. We feel it proper to seek an explanation from Rahul Gandhi." The controversy broke when Rahul Gandhi said that "Supreme Court has accepted that 'Chowkidar Chor Hai'", while addressing the press in Uttar Pradesh after filing his nomination papers in Amethi. "Supreme Court ne nyay ke bare mai baat ke hai. Supreme Court said Chowkidar ne chori ke hai (Supreme Court will do justice. Supreme Court said that Chowkidar is involved in a theft)," Rahul Gandhi had said. |
