Most of the employers calculate taxes for every paycheck based on the assumption that your annual household income the salary on that paycheck * number of paychecks per year. If you are earning 5k in first month of the year, your taxes are deducted with $60k annual income. Next month, if you are earning $7k, your taxes are deducted with $84k annual income.. thus you might fall under different tax bracket and more % of your salary might be deducted.. end of the year when employer gives w2, which reflects your total compensation (including bonus), your tax bracket will be recalculated and you may get returns or owe the money. Let's say your regular monthly paycheck is $10k.. With the assumption that your annual household income is $120K, employer deducts the appropriate taxes (lets assume $2.5k) from your salary. Now in the month you get performance incentive (assume $10k), your total compensation for that month is $20k ($10k regular + $10K bonus) and your taxes are deducted at annual income bracket ($240k). End of the year, on W2, your total compensation will be $130k and you may get back some of the extra taxes you paid in the month that you got bonus. | ||
