If I want to be something else other than being a Hindu .. its being a Sikh. Childhood nunchi same feeling. absolutely. grand temples do not necessarily have to be built with illicit money ..  Jains are some of the biggest philanthropists I ever saw. They donate a lot, not just for temples, but lots of education and water projects in poor societies!
