I'm sure you must have heard about farmers rioting near cotton/chilli market yards? Not sure the small farmers in India can compete in the open market. Also you'll see that most of the farmer suicides are happening due to these so called free market driven crops. Why was cotton offered MSP or why they want Turmeric, Chilli and onions into the MSP ambit? Hayat nagar is full of empty cold storages. Right off the field they aren't able to get the desired price for their products now you want to add additional costing for storage? Storing and then selling them doesn't work because Indian customer is not yet used to bagged veggies. They need them farm fresh. Paddy or sugarcane is considered to be a safe bet, nothing to do with returns or with agri plans, which anyway are not binding on the farmers... Experienced maybe but credibility is NIL! Boss, in a free market, there will be multiple vendors/buyers/sellers. And vegetables problem is bcoz there are no storage facilities! More paddy "produced" than demand. Naturally, farmers dont get more money. Agri plans would have seen diversified crops and better returns for farmers. No need of scrapping this dept. They have lots of experience and knowledge now. Just need to manage them better. Yes, ICRISAT can also help along! What happened to them? Are there farmer suicides and food inflation, both at the same time? Farmers will be first people to agitate if the government doesn't procure. In a free & fair market quality, demand&supply matters which will be to their own peril. Just take a look at how ppl dump vegetables in the villages surrounding Hyderabad when they don't fetch a good price. I know a lot of people who instead of selling to traders prefer to deal with government. It's not like they don't have other options. Take this year for example, people who stored paddy are making a killing out there right now! You just need to be open for all options. I agree. Infact this department has to be scrapped and ICRISAT should be asked to prepare a long term plan which they have taken up on a pilot basis in the areas around Shankerpalli. Lesser government control is better as long as we don't turn out like Bangladesh or Vietnam. | ||

Thats bcoz the agri departments are doing a shabby job year on year! There needs to be a agri plan that needs to be released/worked out before the agri season commences. Today the news is that more than a month after the season has started, the plans are still in the making. Donno what for!

If farmers are allowed to earn their buck from a free market (atleast nationally), dont you think, they dont need anyone's meherbaani of a subsidy? MSPs are supposed to be Minimum Support Price, which have turned into Maximum Support Price due to 'govt monopoly on grain procurement'. Nothing to boast about a senseless policy. These are populist policies without transparency, which are often hijacked by the party faithful for electoral purposes. Power, seeds & fertilisers are subsidised so where exactly are the farmers disadvantaged? They are even provided with MSPs completely ignoring the market dynamics. And to boot they also get loans which will be completely written off irrespective of the crop. 10 years back ppl used to cultivate pulses as their second crop but now they go in for paddy in three cycles. The less we talk about sugar crane politics the better. Oh and just for your information, if at all exports of paddy and wheat are allowed even then their is little benefit for the actual farmer. Just look at farmers in Kerala & Goa who are mainly into cash crops to understand why exports wont help in paddy & wheat. For the umpteenth time I'm repeating myself, Congress ain't my horse and you can flog it all you want. | ||

So, the primary responsibility of every govt is now the responsibility of the hardworking and disadvantaged farmer? (That is, to feed the hungry). While the government netas/babus enjoy in A/C bunglows in Lutyens, Delhi and pass dictats on subsidies, power, water, seed etc? Btw - plz update your sources on the number of hungry people - this Cong govt is proposing FSB to 80 crore (800 million or 67%) hungry Indians, not just 300 million as you claim.
