Jawmetri:

As I said, PhD is devalued. Much like what happened to Engineering in AP in 1997 when some million colleges mushroomed, Masters degree in US same - million and 1 colleges.

Same happened to IITs. How many IITs do we have? 20? 50? Back in 90s when I was in engineering, there were 5 IITs, maybe 6 -guwahati just started. It is great, in the big picture that lot more students can claim to be IITIANS, but in the 90s, top 5 schools - MIT,Stan,Cal,Berk and Princeton used to blindly admit IITIANS.

Right now, from what I hear from my friends who are profs at even the 2nd tier univs : like 20-50 range, even they have a screening process to make sure they get the right crop.

Same goes for PhD. If your phd is not from top 10 schools, you are just 1 in the crowd. I saw the guys who got PhDs from these mediocre colleges and I am sorry, they are not subject matter experts as they should be. In any case, a degree tells so much about a person.

As I said, my friend who is a Caltech PhD and a director in UCSB and has run into a number of nobel prize winners and eminent researchers doesn't think much of a PhD from lower rung universities. Ofcourse he will not make that statement on record, but when you talk as friends, people tend to be more honest and cut out the PC BS.

My 2 cents.

it depends on how relevant their research is to present industry needs.

Also add skills...research relevant kakapoyina if they have specific skills (like math modeling, simulations etc)...they will have good opportunities. Physics phds with these skills getting highly paid jobs in fields that are not directly related to Physics kooda common gaane choosanu.

This guy did his Phd in Physics at Lehigh University,PA...still couldn't find a job and finally switching to IT.

Ok..possible if its a PhD in Physics from a mid-level university. Physics is also too broad for a PhD, if its in something that is not relevant to latest industry needs then very much possible. Top universities lo cheste he will generally have faculty opportunities.

Ee madhya Engineering lo Computer Science or Electronics/Communications lo PhD chesinavallani struggle avvatam ekkada choodala. Mechanical Engineering or Civil Enginnering in average to below average universities cheste baagane struggle. Again specific specializations matter much more.

Same with sciences and social sicences it depends on how relevant their research is to present industry needs. Faculty openings are generally limited.

EOD - phd is just another degree. If you take out the top25 schools in the world, the rest of the places, phd is just an extension of the masters. with about 100+ univs in the US alone offering doctoral programs and a vast number of programmes, the PhD has been devalued.

all said, I think we learn way too much from life.... than a formal degree. I have heard stories about nasa scientists working in fast food joints, because they were too specialized for any other job and were not able to adapt.

Sorry I don't see it just another degree, it is a system that is driving the advancement of human civilization. Saying PhD is an extension of a Masters doesnt do justice to degree. PhD trains a person to be in a state of mind that is thinking of ways to advance science, paths, outcomes... Masters candidates are best for service professional jobs, implementing the stuff that has been innovated or created.

A US phd in any of the top 100-150 is good. Much much better than Indian Phd.

Learning about life, becoming wise is about personal harmony with surroundings, that is different for what a PhD brings to a person and the society.

The friends in IT have a MCA at best, some of them have a bsc in microbilogy or something. again, no offence to ITguys/MCA/Bsc degree. I dont think a degree means anything more.

I have dabbled a lot in research and i have met a lot of people who have PhDs, but they have 0 passion for their field. At the same time there are people with lesser degrees who have a passion/commitment to the field that is absolutely inspirational.

bottom-line : content unnodiki cut-out tho pani ledu, dammu unnodiki degree tho pani ledu.

My friend has a phd from MIT and he works for about the same/lesser money than a few of my friends who are into IT.

PhD/Research is not about making money. It is about your passion to contribute to the betterment of the world. I agree that a value of a PhD from dakota universities has diminished the real significance of a phD, but people who are wise will understand that phd has a noble purpose.(or should I say NOBEL?)[no pun intended on north or south dakota and no offence meant to the 1 or 2 people living in those 2 states ;)
