U'khand: Stranded women raped, murdered Posted by: Pallavi Sengupta Updated: Monday, June 24, 2013, 11:38 [IST] India, June 24: In yet another shocking incident in Uttarakhand, a stranded pilgrim and her daughter were raped and murdered in Gaurikund. Their bodies were discovered from the Ghondhlu Pani village under the Ukhimath police station. Another woman from Bihar was raped in the same area. In a separate incident, three brothers in the same area were killed in a forest near Chauwasi village of Gaurikand and Rs 17 lakh was looted from them. "God only knows when the investigations would start. With the current situation, even the police officials cannot be blamed as they are busy with the rescue work," said one of the locals. Police, however, is looking for the culprits in all the three cases. Meanwhile, two more landslides have hit Uttarakhand. No loss of life has been reported so far. The rubbles have been bulldozed to clear the way for rescue operations. The paratroopers, the army, and the air force have confirmed that rescue operations would continue, despite bad weather. Survivors, who for days have battled the cold without any food or water, are now facing another threat. "Some unknown people came and robbed us. They took everything we had. They took even our shoes. What could we do? They were armed. We had not eaten for days. We were weak. We now have blisters on our feet. With great difficulty we climbed down," said a teary-eyed elderly couple. Radheshyam Pandya, another survivor, said, "I don't know where my brother-in law is. I gave a man Rs. 2000 to bring him to us. He didn't come back. I gave another man Rs. 3000. He too didn't return." "Taxi drivers are charging four times the fare. We had to give everything we had. It became so bad that we almost had to sell the clothes we are wearing. What could we do? We were desperate and worried," said a man stranded in Uttarakhand. "They are selling a paratha for Rs. 250, a bottle of water for Rs. 400," said another survivor. After being pushed to the extreme, physically and psychologically, many of the survivors are arriving at the relief camps, without a rupee in their pockets. Looters chop off woman's leg for anklet Lucknow, DHNS:June 23, 2013 While reports of widespread looting in the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand have been plentiful, a man who escaped alive from the floods has said he had been witness to an incident in which looters allegedly cut off the legs of a dead woman as they could not remove her anklets. Ashish Sharma, a resident of Para in Lucknow, may have survived nature’s fury, but not without paying a price. He lost his parents and two sisters who had been swept away by flood waters. “Some people started looting the pilgrims, who had got panicked after reports that many buildings had been washed away in the floods. Women were specially targeted. I saw a few people chopping off the leg of a dead woman after they could not remove her anklet,” Ashish, who was stationed at Rambara, a few kilometres away from the Kedarnath temple when the killer floods hit, recalled. He is yet to recover from the horror of seeing his family being carried away by the floods. “I could only see them being washed away. They remain traceless till now,” Ashish said. Mayank, another survivor from Lucknow, also said some locals who appeared like labourers from across the border steered people to the upper reaches of the mountain in a seeming attempt to save them from rampaging rivers, but robbed them off their valuables once they got to safety. “We saw a few people trying to snatch a gold chain from an old woman. We had a scuffle with them after which they fled,” said Mayank, who had been at Kedarnath with five of his friends to offer prayers. | ||

While the state has been experiencing the nature's fury, some unidentified people continue their loot. Even dead bodies were not spared. A Kedarnath survivor released a video taken in his mobile phone. The video shows how a man cut open a bracelet from a dead body. Cnn-IBN quoted one eyewitness as saying, "We saw dead bodies whose trousers, belts, licenses and all other valuables were stolen." U'khand Shocker: Even corpses looted Meanwhile, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) DG Ajay Chadha confirmed one report which said that the officials seized a bag carrying money. Chadha said, "While rescuing some people from site, we have found a bag full of money and jewels. The money is around Rs 1.14 crore. These people have been handed over to local authorities." Earlier it was reported how pilgrims and other stranded people in the region were looted on the name of food and water. People were forced to pay Rs 250 for a 'paratha' and Rs 100 for a small pack of chips. A taxi driver from the region was quoted as saying, "I had to pay Rs 40 for a small bowl of rice. There was no food available anywhere." Expressing their disappointment, one of the tourists was quoted as saying, "Taxi drivers are demanding Rs 3,000 to 4,000 for a journey that would normally cost Rs 1,000.
