Indeed, the induction of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi into the national campaign had a devastating effect. Since the BJP was not fighting on a Hindutva plank, there was no question of any Hindu consolidation at the constituency level. At the same time, Modi's presence appears to have generated a Muslim consolidation throughout northern and eastern India. In Bihar and West Bengal particularly, the share of Muslim votes for the NDA was almost zero. This would explain the magnitude of the Trinamool Congress defeat in West Bengal. There was a similar consolidation of minority votes against the NDA in Tamil Nadu. | ||
