yes, they have become habits. its like a check mark in a signoff sheet, consciously making sure that the you have gone through the required steps before proceeding. before the run, i for some reason need to remind myself about the distance (quantity), or else it feels incomplete. its almost as if i dint know why i started the run . it doesn't matter whether i ran the entire distance, less or more. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |

Mental_sachinodu: i fee these little rituals are a way to feed our unconscious mind to turn our concentration to the task at hand.
I think I have quoted this before in the DB - though used more in dance theory - this sloka to me exemplifies why rituals are a good starting point.. Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti, Yatho Drishti thatho Manah Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava, Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa Where the hand goes, the eye follows, where the eye goes, the mind follows, where the mind goes, feeling follows, where feelings start the mood is set All rituals are a trigger to set the mood by steering the focus back to what needs to be done - over period they become unconscious habits The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet : James Oppenheim |

I was recently playing ball with a kid, where i have to throw a ball at him and he would catch. he is in early teens, and he always touches his socks before each throw. I remembered i used to do go through ritual, before bowling every ball, or even while batting, or in soccer before entering the field, i would always sway my shoulders to left and right, and clench my fists and then speak "start" to myself. after the play time, i asked him why he followed the routine, he just said "its something i got used to!!" . i started thinking about this, and started noticing all the little rituals i do, before my daily runs, i still stay "start" to my self, and then begin. if i forget saying start or if my concentration is else where and i miss saying start, i feel i missed something, halt and then start again. I had a feeling that there might be some sort of irrational superstitious dependency, but the more i think about this, the more i fee these little rituals are a way to feed our unconscious mind to turn our concentration to the task at hand. Especially in situations where the pressure of them game or task clouds our concentration, and introduce doubt and possibly fear, these rituals bring back the familiar routine and the comfort of the situation. the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada |
