reading his poems as part of school curriculum

We had his short stories and excerpts from plays - specially remember The Happy Prince, The model millionnaire- not so much his poems :-)

A favorite quote I have often quoted in the DB - "The old believe anything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything "- a wonderful synopsis of thought processes through age :-)

"lives a mimicry" - is that a pessimistic/negative observation? or positive?

well, considering his struggle i feel it has a bit of negative observation, but then i guess, it depends on how we look at it.

profound but depressing too...

Profound yes - but not depressing to me - infact it has the exact opposite effect:-)

It was written by a man at the lowpoint in his life, in depressing circumstances - and what came out was an introspective journey to realisation, a consolidation of who he truly is and a triumph of the spirit:-)It is an uplifting piece of writing once I look beyond the circusmtances:-)

Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone elses opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.

Very wise observation.

MS,
This thread reminded me about De Profundis - felt like rereading it and found an online version - do read if you have not read it already :-)

MS,

I have read the poem and some of his short stories(in high school) - don't recall myuch of the poem except that it was a very dark introspective one.. as opposed to his short stories that I read - however there is an essay he wrote in jail that is my favorite- De Profundis - very thought-provoking..:-) Yeah his life would have been different if he lived today - he definitely would not have gone to jail or written this poem and maybe not the essay ..

Cocanada:

what is it?

ohati ani emi ledhu.. its about a guy who murdered his wife, and wilde is in the same prison as the murderer. his observations on that guy, law, and actions that may or may not qualify as crimes, based on societal acceptance.

when he says coward does it with a kiss, he means the kiss of judas. essentially leading to a crime. a soldier with a sword, where he is killing to save a life he loves. ala anna maata...

naaku full grasp ledhi, motham poem meedha, but its interesting to read, and sadvina kodhi kotha konam lo ardham avutha undhi

would his life been any different if he was born in this era ?

Ballad of reading gaol sadavandi veelu unappudu...

And all men kill the thing they love,
By all let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!
