Btw .. 2012 lo .. 69 billion USD (approx 3,50,000 crores INR) were the remittances from overseas to India. Thats the highest of all countries in the world. And I do think, without these contributions, India will be a very poor country, doing very badly, though it has the potential to reach the sky on its own!

NRIs rock! :-)

Gusagusa:

* E-migrate project will provide end-to-end computerized solutions for all processes in the emigration system. The system will link all key stakeholders on a common platform

* New pension and life insurance fund for overseas Indian workers. Life insurance cover against natural death also to be introduced

* Action plan to implement recommendations of inter-ministerial committee on issues relating to repatriation, relief and rehabilitation of Indians affected by developments in West Asia

JAIPUR: Reminding non-resident Indians of the constitutional provision that allows them to vote in Indian elections, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday told a gathering of the diaspora from 60 countries that the government had issued notification for registration of overseas voters. In other words, NRIs can vote in the upcoming assembly elections in five states.

"The government has issued notification for registration of overseas voters under the Representation of People's Act (1950). This constitutes the first major step to enable Indian residents abroad to participate in our election process," said the Prime Minister at the annual diaspora meet at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas at the Birla Auditorium here.

Interestingly, in the last round of assembly elections in April 2011, only one NRI had registered his name for casting his vote. Sujit Dutta, an NRI living in Oman, was the only overseas Indian to vote in the West Bengal state polls after the Election Commission's announcement that NRIs would be allowed to exercise their franchise if they registered their names in the voters' list.

Saying that the diaspora plays an important role in development, "We believe the Indian diaspora has much more to contribute to the building of modern India. We propose to facilitate, encourage and promote this engagement," Singh said. Over the past year, we have taken a number of steps towards this end."

Singh also announced Overseas Indian Card for foreign spouses of such card holders. "In the last session of Parliament, we introduced a bill intended to merge and streamline People of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizens of India schemes by amending the Citizenship Act," he said.

The Prime Minister also said that the government had decided to introduce and sponsor a new pension and life insurance fund for overseas Indian workers. "The scheme will encourage, enable and assist overseas workers to voluntarily save for their return and resettlement in old age," he said. Accepting the long-pending demand of workers abroad, Prime Minister announced a low cost life insurance cover against natural death.

Expressing concern about safety of Indians in the Gulf, Singh said that the government has conveyed to countries of the region that India has stakes in their peace and stability and that these countries should appropriately look after interests of the Indian communities.
