Agreed, wherever it is, Africa or Indian subcontinent, there will be a compassionate angle. But if the people belong to your origin somehow, it does bring you closer. For example, Sonia Gandhi can wear as many sarees and speak fluent Hindi, but with all my bashing against archaic Hindu practices, I don't think she will feel as hurt when another Hindu is killed because of his/her religion as I would. A Telugu will feel for another Telugu. South Indians will feel the same resentment for ridicule by North Indians. Some bond is always there. | ||

Actually, I believe English media is trying to spread the angle through SL government that Sinhalas origin are Bengalis. As for the SL war, hate against India and Tamils have been instilled in the hearts of Sinhala throughout generations. Something similar to what Jews faced in Hitler's Germany. Besides, fear of losing their nation to India has always been a strong point to hate India too. The current PM, Rajapakshe's, interview from 25 years ago is on Youtube. He blatantly states they don't want Srilanka to become another Indian state, and Sinhala must not lose control. It's pretty well acknowledged that Buddhism in Srilanka is an organization much like Islamic extremism. Monks are prepared from childhood to feed hate in people. Hard to stop that kind of hatred. | ||

Of course. In general, people have a weak knowledge of history in India and they rely on tall claims by some westerner or influential person to believe on issues of their past. Rather than learning it through all the sources available, including history class, the most easily accessible and in your face source. I love history, by the way. Would write a book if there was any money in it, but most authors are poor.:-) | ||

History lesson: To clarify, there are various groups of Tamils who came to SL at various times. The Eelam claim is by Tamils who consider themselves to be natives of Srilanka, dating their lineage to India back to Choza empire and before. History and geography support this claim. Then there are the Estate Tamils, Indian Tamils who went to Srilanka during the colonial times. Then there is the Muslim Tamils, who speak Tamil but consider themselves to be muslims first, and are part of the Barbar community(high level of intermarriage though). | ||

Trouble is, most people sleep in history class.:-) Take a look at South Asian population. If Dravidian lineage means dark skin tone, Srilankans, Tamils(of Srilanka), 70% of Indian Subcontinent(South India, West/East states, Bangladesh, pockets of Pak) are from same background. Logically speaking, Tamils probably were inhabitants of SL just like Native Americans in USA. Sinhalese calling themselves Aryan and original inhabitants is like Americans' possessiveness of their stolen land. The British took Tamils to work in estates during colonization just like they took Indians all over the world to work there. | ||
