IIIT Hyderabad was set up in 1998 as a not-for-profit public private partnership (NPPP) and is the first IIIT to be set up (under this model) in India. It was envisioned by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of the State of Andhra Pradesh from 1995–2004 . The government of Andhra Pradesh lent support to the institute by grant of land and buildings. A Governing Council consisting of people from academia, industry and government presides over the governance of the institution. Dr. Rajeev Sangal, former Head of Department of Computer Science, IIT Kanpur, has played an instrumental part in setting up of the institute. He is the director of the institute. IIIT-H is as research centres and labs, instead of the conventional departments, to facilitate inter-disciplinary research and the flow of knowledge within the institute. It is the only such institute of higher learning to follow such a model in India.
