Infosys lo 2004 to 2007 chesinappudu vividha rakaala egesperiences. Bottomline - Client Techies, Vendor Onsite Techies and Mgmt, Vendor Offshore Mgmt and Vendor Offshore Techies/devs, are all like four different pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. Size of the project batti, involved parties marusthaa vuntaaru. The pieces need to fit together, and the people acting as those pieces of the puzzle need to stay in-sync knowing exactly their role, their contribution in achieving successful completion/implementation of the project. Onsite-offshore model lo prathi saari pieces fall apart. As usual because the people involved carry their baggage full of their problems/concerns to the solution table. I admit that couple of times I behaved as a D**K, and couple of times, something else wouldn't work-out. Yelagaina, project has been completed successfully ani tosesthaar.. chappatlu kodathaar... appraisals maatram poor performance ani isthaar.. Onsite techies emo Prod DB access vuntadi during warranty/maintenance support phase, so direct gaa poyi values maarchesthu vuntaar!!!

Client onsite tech lead/team -> Vendor onsite tech lead/BA -> vendor offshore tech lead - > offshore janta

This should be the communication protocol. Work assignment and status updates should follow this path. Each entity should be held accountable for their deliverable.

It is very important that the vendor tech leads(onsite and offshore) should be very good. If the client tech teams are directly talking to the offshore janta, then there is something wrong.

off share team manage sesthunna but they are employees, and they are in russia. so na exp different ga undhi.

ofcourse, it takes more effort in going over the project. tech requirements kante, process artham avataniki time paduthundhi.

project start ayye mundhu, few days, conf calls lo just process discussions, impacts, basic functionality ninsi advanced possible scnerios varaku fure discussions. many times i end up working over time, but in the long run it helps me. once the project implementation starts and even support, naa involvement saaana thakva untadhi. weekly web conf okati start sesa.. only for discussions and clarifications, not have to be tech related or particular project related.

hole sale ga its a a different dynamic. mana expectation vallaki artham kavali, they need to understand the importance of their task, appudu vaala response different ga untadhi , and ofcourse they all so should have the interest.

kindha desi offshare teams exp naaku ledhu. looks like the productive guys have a lot of people to convince

no.. i wont call all offshore teams to be bad..
a lot depends on the people from vendor onsite (engagement managers, leads etc).. these guys if they are driven enough will pick good people.. watch what offshore people are doing and make sure things are on par.. i have seen examples of two vendor teams in the same project and how well/bad they are handled by their leaders

1. Offshore team ki business interaction almost NIL. Vaaallaki full understanding undaali ani expect cheyalemu, BUT, they need to have the zeal to learn and understand. Adhi most important. aa attitude lekapothey parama waste entha hardwork chesinaa.oka 1 yr literal torture. Almost entire work ni re-work cheyalsi vachedhi - ZERO quality. Entha cheppina no-use asalu. Had to get rid of that team.

On the other hand new team, not from vendor, maa company lo offshore fulltime ga join ayina vaallu very good. They are trying to understand at least and most importantly, thinking of the right way to do things. I told them to challenge us whenever they think something is not right. I can see clear difference b/w this team and the vendor's team.

One thing you all need to realise is that while you are recognised for the waork you do here , their management recognises their work based on everyone else's opinions , the clients, their managers , the onsite co-ordinators - ikkadamanaki oka boss unte vallaki 3-4 - vellandari expectations manage cheyyali...hence the need for recognition and politics:-)

Vallaki progression developer , lead ....for their own career progression - theat is part of the issues - oka developer ga 4-5 years unter kani serious expertise radu ..and they are expected to become leads and teach others at 2-3 years ...cheyyakapote appraisal lo issue ...Ikkada onsite vallani chuste kuda jaali vestundi - daytime client expectations , night offshore calls , and in between their own management's business development work ...

i had similar experience. requirement lo comma full stop teda unna doubts ani venakki pampe varu. testing asalu em cheyyakunda nenu calls lo cheppe changes ni impact analysis cheyyakunda blind ga uat ki release chesaru. oka 8 9 months chusi tikka regi inka sr manager daggara nunchi andarni loop lo petti veera kummudu kummanu. debbaki next two months lo results raadam modalu ayyai.

but mee case lo ila jarige chances undakapovachu or undachu. luc unte set avtadi team. lekapote kotta team ni adagandi :-)

Desi engg college standards have fallen and so have hiring standards and training given by the offshore companies - my tech leads complain about the lack of coding standards adherence or in offshore code too ... So pretty much the first year has to be taken as on the job training - it's a fact of life ani decide ayyanu - then they pick up :-)

Depends on the team - people who have been working on a vertical for some time are very good - fresh teams take time to catch-up ..

Offshore is handicapped by lack of exposure to the business conversations or the design discussions so they will lag somewhat - I find that rotation of people thru on site really helps them :-)

papam offhsore vallanu emi anakandi, andulonu company-wide generalize cheyyakandi...worked in off-shore & on-site many years, so i know how things work in india...

pedda branded company lo waste gallu untaru..
chinna companies lo kathi lanti vallu untaru.. just specific to that particular team/project..

india lo..oka 2/3 years exp unna vallu kavali anukondi, (to support onsite) usually freshers ni pattukochi, oka one week onsite leader tho KT ippichesi ready chestharu.

onsite lo unna vallaki usually ekkuva exposure, knowledge on project, processes ani telisi untayi...it takes time for offshore to pickup things (again based on individual skills and pickup talent)..
