Visa-on-arrival facility to be extended to 16 more nations: Chiranjeevi The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) is taking various initiatives to boost tourism in the times of slowdown. Union Tourism Minister, K. Chiranjeevi says tourist arrivals not too good but is better than other countries. The actor turned-politician talks to Vishakha Talreja of the New Indian Express how he plans to give a boost to the tourism sector. India’s inbound numbers are still quite low as compared to other countries and our outbound tourism figures? I am not saying we are too happy with our foreign tourist arrival figures. But even when globally countries are facing recession, we are still witnessing some growth. Also while in India, inbound tourism is seeing a growth of 5.4%, the global average is 3.9 per cent. So the sector’s performance is above average. Foreign tourist arrivals in India during 2012 were 66.48 lakh with a growth of 5.4% over previous year. Is the tourism ministry looking at extending the visa-on-arrival facility to other countries? The visa-on-arrival facility is already being given to 11 countries. We have proposed to extend the facility to 16 more countries which include Germany, Spain and France. When I recently met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, he sounded positive and we are hoping we can announce something in a couple of months. We have very good synergy with other ministries. With the help of Home Ministry and Ministry of External Affairs we have simplified the Embarking Card for Indians and Disembarking Cards for foreigners. These forms will be tourist friendly and ask for very few details. This will come into effect from 1st July this year. What about security concerns that many countries raise by issuing travel advisories? When recent bomb blast happened in Hyderabad, we thought that the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) might tell us to cancel the UNWTO conference that is scheduled to take place in Hyderabad in April. However it is not being cancelled. MoT is also taking initiatives to give a fillip to tourism in terror hit states of Kashmir and the North-East. We organised our first International Tourism Mart in Guwahati in January. Even though we have been given a target budget that the ministry has to spend in Kashmir, we are spending more. I have sanctioned about 21 projects in Kashmir. MoT to launch Clean India Campaign from Varanasi shortly Campaign to be extended to Buddhist sites The Ministry of Tourism (MoT), Government of India will soon launch the Clean India Campaign, started by MoT last year, from the Ghats of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. MoT has started discussions with the state government as well as corporate houses to launch a cleanliness drive of the bathing ghats of Varanasi, said Dr K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Tourism, Government of India, while announcing the schedule for the National Tourism Awards 2012. Dr Chiranjeevi said that the government wanted to ensure that places like Varanasi, which are popular attractions among both foreign and domestic tourists, presented a good image. The Minister also said that the drive would be extended to all Buddhist circuits as well. A public sector undertaking, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has agreed to support the initiative at important Buddhist sites like Konark and Sanchi, he informed, adding that the endeavour was to expand the campaign to all major tourist destinations in India with the support of state governments and corporate houses. The National Tourism Awards ceremony for 2012 will be held on March 18, 2013 in Delhi, and Pranab Kumar Mukherjee, President of India, will be the Chief Guest.
