we never know how capable we are until we face the situation. like Michael corleone in god father, family business was not his comfort zone, planned his life to be different from the rest of his family, even the rest of the family wanted the same, but once he got into it, he was the baddest of all.

if you feel like taking up the challenge go for it, and fight it out.
the world of appearances may or may not be real, or both may and may not be real - or may be indescribable; or may be real and indescribable, or unreal and indescribable; or in the end may be read and unreal and indescribable - its all Syadvada

selli, Managament roles here in the US or anywhere for that matter comes with some pre-requisites that need to be inbuilt or acquired at some point of time. Management position is the only way to grow here, technical roles have certain limitation after which your career stagnates pretty much.

some tips to succeed here
- Ability to deal with politics and understand the power center and stay in good books of everybody.

- Ability to deal with adversaries(colleagues) in a politically correct way, in simple navvutu ekkada vunchalo akkada vunche skill

- Ofcourse talent lo manam evariki second kadanukondi but most of the times we are naive enough to take things in face value when presented. The corporate ladder here is rife with power broking and mostly we get caught in the cross fire if we seem to align with one side of the players. Most of the time stay neutral and build bridges rather then taking sides.

- be the harbinger for change or showcase your ideas before you present them else they get stolen and you lose the opportunity. Everybody in the management layer tries to grow at the expense of others.

- create your power base, circle of friends. everybody in management positions try to create a power base for themselves and that is how you keep growing.

- learn to deal with difficult decisions that you have to make in course of your work , ex given by another tammi - firing somebody.

read some good practical management books
In history there is no such thing as the last word on any subject research leads to new things every day

My observation was not based on what you were arguing about. It looked to me like you expect things to be certain way because that is how they should be (in your view). Naa point was based off of that. Nothing more nothing less. :-)

And you also need to be strong enough to take brave decisions. Once i had to fire a pregnant lady who was on h1b visa. So if she sheds 2 tears looking straight into your eye.. you should have a spine to stand tall and explain.

I was asked if I want to fire this someone. I simply don't have the heart or mindset for it. I rather take his/her workload on than fire them. That's what I said for now. I mean these things evolve and we change accordingly but I can't imagine firing someone. I don't have the spine.

I have seen a lot of layoff, but never been around to witness a firing. That's a whole new ball game.

To be a successful manager you got to act like an a'hole at one time or the other (in some cases all the time). It is not a bad thing (At least from sr mgmt perspective)

So if you can act like one then take it up.

And you also need to be strong enough to take brave decisions. Once i had to fire a pregnant lady who was on h1b visa. So if she sheds 2 tears looking straight into your eye.. you should have a spine to stand tall and explain.
If god doesn't like the way I live, let him tell me, not you

Depends on your career goals. Is that something you would enjoy doing? It will give you a better opportunity to move up all the way to the top than if you choose to stay on the technical side.
