* Challenges authorities to make footage of engineers opening the machine public * Prasad, co-researchers to demonstrate the vulnerability of EVMs at a conference in Chicago * 'Stolen' EVM given to Prasad by two 'unidentified' persons who asked him to hack it
quote:HYDERABAD : Hari K. Prasad, the city-based computer engineer arrested by the Mumbai Police on charges of stealing an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) from the Mumbai Collectorate, claimed that he was never allowed a full chance by the Election Commission (EC) to show the vulnerability of the machines. Though four EVMs were given to him in September last in response to his challenge that the machines were fallible, he was stopped short of fully examining them, he said. Flanked by activists from VeTA (Citizens for Verifiability, Transparency, and Accountability in Elections) and Jana Chaitanya Vedika, Mr. Prasad addressed a media conference on Tuesday, his first after being released on bail. "The EC's Deputy Election Commissioners, technical committee members and engineers from ECIL were present when I and my engineers opened the machine. When we explained about how simple the tampering could be, officials became wary and asked us to stop the process until further permission is obtained from CEC," Mr. Prasad, the Managing Director of a city-based technology firm, NetIndia alleged. Claiming that the whole process was video-recorded, he challenged the authorities to make the footage public. He also said that Janata Party President Subramanya Swamy, Psephologist G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, and former Advocate General of Orissa Jayant Das were present on the occasion. But after that, there was no response from the EC despite many written requests seeking permission to go ahead, he said, and claimed that the stolen EVM was given to him by two 'unidentified' persons who asked him to hack it. The successful tampering was video-recorded by his co-researcher from Netherlands and later released to media. Mr. Prasad, however, said that he did not remember who the instigators were. He was questioned by nearly 50 police officers for eight days. Denying political motives, he said he was not against the use of EVMs, and his attempt was only to highlight the need for a better and fool-proof technology. He, along with two co-researchers Michigan University professor J. Alex Halderman and a Holland-based technology activist Rop Gonggrijp, will demonstrate the vulnerability of the EVMs at a conference on Computer and Communications Security to be held in Chicago on October 4. T. Hanuman Chowdary, former IT Advisor to the government, likened Mr. Prasad's operation to sting journalism and said 'whistle-blowers' were a separate class of citizens .
