Majlis opposes Telangana Liberation Day * 'No such demand made between 1948-56 when Hyderabad State was integrated with Indian Union' * 'It gained momentum only after Shiv Sena came to power in Maharashtra and BJP in Karnataka'
quote:Hyderabad: As the clamour for official celebration of Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 grows, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) has come out strongly against the move. The party sees a sinister design in the demand and feels the whole thing is aimed at furtherance of the Sangh Parivar agenda. "It will only promote the hate ideology towards Muslims and nothing else," said Majlis president Asaduddin Owaisi. No such demand was made between 1948 and 1956 when the Hyderabad State was integrated with the Indian Union and Andhra Pradesh was formed. It gained momentum only after the Shiv Sena came to power in Maharashtra and the BJP in Karnataka. Conceding such demands would not strengthen secular polity, but rather give handle to communal elements, "It will open up old wounds," Mr. Owaisi feared. If September 17 is officially celebrated, then there ought to be a debate on the Pandit Sunderlal Committee report which stated that 1.5 lakh Muslims were butchered during the police action. "Any celebration will only send the message that this day deliverance was achieved from Muslims," the Hyderabad MP said. Hate agenda Stating that he was proud to be an Indian, Mr. Owaisi said the only day to celebrate was August 15 when the country became independent. The BJP was raking up the issue time and again only with a view to strengthen its base in the State. Unfortunately, other political parties were also trying to promote its hate agenda by supporting the demand.

Sept 17 to be observed as âMerger Dayâ Omer Farooq | Hyderabad The tension brewing over the demand to celebrate September 17 as âTelangana Liberation Dayâ has eased with the pro-Telangana organisations deciding to observe the day as âMerger Dayâ. The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC), comprising several political parties and organisations, has unanimously decided not to celebrate the day as âLiberation Dayâ following opposition from Muslim minority organisations. The representatives of organisations like the Jamat-e-Islami, Movement for Peace and Justice, AP Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee and some communist groups had strongly opposed the idea of Liberation Day celebration at the steering committee meeting of TJAC on Monday night. They warned that such a move would only revive old wounds and give an opportunity to the mischief-mongers to spread hatred against Muslims. They wanted that the day should be observed as âMerger Dayâ as the State of Hyderabad was merged into the Indian Union on that day in 1948. TJAC convener Prof Kodanda Ram told reporters after the meeting that it was unanimously decided to observe the day as âMerger Dayâ by hoisting the National Flag as well as the Telangana flag. It was on September 17, 1948, that Nizamâs Dominion, the biggest princely State in British India, was brought into the Indian Union after a military action by Indian Government. It ended Nizamâs rule over the Hyderabad State, parts of which were later distributed among three States of Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra as part of State reorganisation. While the day is officially celebrated in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, the Andhra Pradesh Government does not mark the day with any official ceremonies. This year, the TRS, BJP, CPI, Praja Rajyam Party and Telugu Desam had demanded that the day be celebrated officially. But after strong opposition from the Muslim community, the TRS has mellowed down. At the steering committee meeting, the BJP continued to insist that the day should be celebrated as âLiberation Dayâ. But after near-unanimity among all other parties and organisations, the BJP was forced to accept the idea of Merger Day, albeit with a protest. The Jamat, MPJ and others also demanded that tributes should also be paid on the day to those lakhs of people who died during police action in 1948. Prof Kodanda Ram said that while Telangana region (Hyderabad State) was merged into the Indian Union in 1948, the dream of the local people to have self-rule was yet to be realised. âSince then, the region has been exploited by the Andhra rulers,â he claimed. |
