He said the Home Minister's remark was the worst possible example of vote-bank politics.

Chidambaram's remark triggered uproar in Parliament with BJP and Shiv Sena members demanding an apology from him. Even Congress appeared to distance itself from the remarks saying, terror has no colour and that care should be taken on use of words.

Addressing a function of state police chiefs in Delhi earlier this week, Chidambaram had said a new phenomenon of "saffron terrorism" involved in many bomb blasts has been uncovered.

His comments came against the backdrop of investigators finding links between Hindu extremist outfits and at least five bomb blasts in recent years - at Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid, at Ajmer, Goa, Malegaon in Maharashtra and Modasa in Gujarat.

Describing Singh as a "weak" Prime Minister, the BJP leader said he lacked authority and power to take decisions on vital national issues.

"When our soldiers are fighting bravely against terrorism and Naxalism, the PM has advised them to exercise restraint while taking action," Punj said.

Punj, who is in-charge of Gujarat affairs, accused Congress of attempting to destabilise the Narendra Modi Government in the state.

Quoting Gujarat cadre IPS officer Geetha Johri, who has filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging CBI has been pressurising her to implicate some political leaders in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, he said Gujarat is progressing well under the Modi Government and Congress has not been able to digest this.

Therefore, Congress is trying to dislodge the BJP Government, he said.

When the country is struggling to register 2 per cent growth in agriculture, Gujarat has achieved a robust 9.2 per cent growth rate in the key sector, the BJP leader said.

"Since the Congress has lost the last three Assembly elections, it has hatched a conspiracy to defame the Gujarat Government and target its popular Chief Minister," Punj said.

CBI is being used as a tool by the Central Government for this purpose, the MP alleged.
