I have been posting the same story more or less the same way for the past 6 years in our movie based DBs, but this language issue always starts afresh at the same place and ends in the same place. The problem: - 1. India is multi-lingual country so need to have an official language for central government. 2. English is a reminiscent of the British so need to eradicate it out of India and install Indian aboriginal language as official medium through India and its educational institutes etc,. The solution in 1960s: - 1. Make Hindi the sole official language of India, making it compulsory to get a central government Job. 2. Make all universities, central government office function only in Hindi. The Objections/concerns from Non-Hindi speaking Indians: - 1. Making Hindi compulsory to obtain a central government jobs gives northern Indian people access to key central government jobs subduing non-Hindi speaking counter parts. 2. So English was proposed as associate official language of India. The misunderstanding of Northern Indian Hindi community: - 1. Northern Indian community treats Hindi as "National Language" going by true translation of "rashtriya bhasha". Actually Official Language means "Raja Basha" not "rashtriya Basha" and India has never defined anything as "National Langauge". It is only the creation of Northern Hindi community. Some countries such as Pakistan defined Urdu as their National Language to oppress the Punjabi community and Bengali community (Bangladesh was part of it at that time), and Bangladesh immediately objected it and got freedom from Pakistan and made Bangla as their National Language. But India is not such a foolish country to make one language as National Language, which, by the way, has nothing to do anything with people's way of life other then a National Symbol of a country. NB: The United States never declared English as its official though more than 90% of Americans speak English giving importance to minority Spanish speaking people. The US has no official language. Lingua Franca: Many Indians feel that there is a need for linking language "the Lingua Franca" and thus support Hindi as natural solution, but not many don't know the definition of Lingua Franca. By definition, Lingua Franca between two language groups is a language that is not spoken by either of the groups, so as Hindi is spoken by almost 40% of Northern Indian people, it cannot be chosen as Lingua Franca. The obvious choice is English, if not Sanskrit. Sanskrit is no doubt qualifies than any other language, but, its has its own demerits, 1. it is a non-secular language, Sanskrit is being used for thousands of years as a language of religion, and 2. it is not a living language, (a dead language). I too have a proposal. whey cannot we make our own English, just as Americans made their own American English, by Sanskrit-ising English. glad to know that you make an effort to learn telugu, but I know many friends of mine who cant read telugu, they cant read Hindi either. I agree with you that no language needs to forced by law, but we are loosing Telugu, and at this point of time, Hindi is the least of the reasons to worry about. It is English we need to worry about ani antanu nenu, it is more than a personal feeling. i have had northie friend who squirmed every time me and my friend spoke in telugu...i am still seeing people who speak hindi w/o regard to whether or not other people understand it....i have seen people who converse in hindi even though there are non-hindi speaking people who have a hard time understanding hindi... i have seen northies living in hyd for years and who don't speak an ounce ot telugu...i have had it said to my face that we need to speak hindi if we knew it...i have seen telugu people speak butler hindi instead of speaking in english...for everu sibal there has to be a karunanidhi... lets not bring in individual aspects into this...some people have a good fortune of meeting broad minded people others dont

if we are to make english mandatory vs other languages then i would end up supporting regional languages....even today half the students ( rural places) read their text books in telugu and haven't they made a transition albiet a difficult one... the problem is in the three-language system...english, hindi and mother tongue...the same demographic majority argument will play against the regional language and it will be the one to suffer...case in point we don't even take telugu after 10th std (for marks or what ever reason)... there will come a time when telugu will no longer be used if we replace it with other dominat langauge....with english , we have co-adapted to a better extent...if hindi has to be conversing language let people have their say but most people would like to speak in english... that is hated by hindi-speaking people but they don't apply this to hindi Vs regional lang | ||

A clerk in Guntur railway station .. would not only be needed to know Telugu .. but Hindi as well .. because .. that would make him serve the huge Telugu population that would be traversing through the rail station .. along with the next highest set of population that would be on the rails .. I have no problem with it, infact ours is just the second generation who is carrying on their education in english and not their mother tongues. Before the explosion of private schools, almost everyone studied in their mother tongue and they did pretty good. even reknowned scientists like c v raman, bose everybody had their education in their own mother tongues. even my parents, and im pretty sure your father generation did their education in theri mother tongues, and they did as good as we are doing.

there is no national language per se...english and hindi are the official languages of communication between center and state ....the argument is who and why did they decide to give priority to hindi and the efforts made by nehru and Co to make Hindi as the sole offical language...the efforts still being made by central govt to prioritize hindi....what would you choose Hindi or telugu when push comes to shove...we are not against hindi speaking but against forceful feeding of hindi...people in the centre need to respect the languages and regional feelings of other states....what we are being forced as the national culture/ language is the domain of a few privileged classes even in the hindi heartland.... we are facing problems over various Telugu dialects in one state and some one is trying to have uniform language all over the country....kapil sibal went as afar as saying that Hindi should be the mandatory language in schools in all states... this is the problem | ||
