Srikakulam , Andhra Pradesh: The National Environment Appellate Authority has overruled the environmental clearance given to Nagarjuna Group's proposed thermal power plant at Sompeta in Srikakulam district. It's a shot in the arm for environmentalists and local fisher-folk. In a Singur-like flash point on Wednesday, police fired at protesters killing two and injuring 19 others. Over 3000 villagers and activists were protesting the setting up of the 2640 MW thermal power plant. Activists say that the Rs 12000 crore thermal plant spread over 1800 acres would adversely impact the ecologically fragile Beela wetland area. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the issue is pending in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, that has issued notices. There is also a case pending with the State Human Rights Commission against the establishment of a coal-based thermal plant in a precious water body. The judgment has important implications for projections in similar wetlands elsewhere as well. No industrial activity is permitted within a wetland in India, under the Environment Protection Act 1986. chala fast reaction from govt . | ||
